Come On, Mother Nature! Be a Team Player!

>> Thursday, January 22, 2009

So it’s supposed to be cold for the half-marathon on Saturday morning. Here’s what some local stations are currently saying:

That's still well below 0 at the start. AND there’s the possibility of high winds on top of that (one station said 30 below wind chill Saturday morning).

What I’m worried about is the fine print from when we registered: if it gets too cold, the race director has the right to turn the half marathon into a quarter marathon, or they can cancel it all together! I guess that’s what I get for running a race in the dead of winter in Minnesota.

I know the race director has to think of everyone’s safety, but I’m bummed that my first “A race” for the year could be cancelled. I got an e-mail this morning that makes it sound like that if the race should be shortened or cancelled, they will do it in the next day:

As of today, we will run the half marathon and 5k course as published. Should the weather have a drastic change in the next 24 hours, we will post weather announcements here.

I wanna run 13.1 miles on Saturday! Here’s to hoping!!

p.s. There’s a different sort of Friday Funny coming your way tomorrow. It’s not really “ha ha funny,” but it’s amusing and kinda neat. Yep, I said neat. It’s also swell. And super-duper.

oh that sucks. i'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll run your 13.1 'A' race miles on Saturday! Good luck!

C 3:29 PM, January 22, 2009

Fingers crossed you get to run the full 13.1. But why you'd want to in that weather is beyond me.

Calyx Meredith 3:41 PM, January 22, 2009

Golly gee willikers that's cold! I'll hope you get to run too but I'm with Xenia in wondering why you'd want to in that weather!

GoBigGreen 3:41 PM, January 22, 2009

Fingers crossed. If it helps I had ( HAD, past tense, things change) an outdoor ride planned.
Buzz Kill and the BITTER Word in that first forecast makes me think of..overcooked Brussel Sprouts? Vinegar?...
Running is better than both of those!
Be Safe, Run for FUN and tell Mother Nature that she owes you ( us, MN...) one!

Kelly 3:42 PM, January 22, 2009

Hey! At least it'll be sunny on saturday!

Heather 3:49 PM, January 22, 2009

I'm planning on running the half on Saturday too and keep looking at the weather with dread . . . Last time I ran it was '06 and it was 4 above, which was cold, but doable!

Chic Runner 3:56 PM, January 22, 2009

whaaaaa whaaaaa bummer! :( I'll keep you in my thoughts so hopefully you can go out and torture yourself through 13.1 miles. :)

Oooh, I hope the weather cooperates for you. The cold is workable, but I hate wind (even if it's behind me, pushing me along). My race last weekend was fabulous. It was low 40's at the start and low 50's when I finished (2:15 later). You gotta love southern Utah. Maybe you should try a destination race next January (like Cozumel, or Phoenix or San Diego, or even Utah, LOL). It's a great way to start off the year!

Unknown 4:29 PM, January 22, 2009

That is bone chilling temps for an actual race. Rub on the body glide.

Marci 4:32 PM, January 22, 2009

Keepin' my fingers crossed for ya Steve :)

The Boring Runner 4:59 PM, January 22, 2009

Wow, that IS cold. But I am a wuss. I thought that you MN people had lava through your veins that melted snow and ice with each foot strike!? At least that is what I assumed was the case with those feet pics....

Marlene 5:09 PM, January 22, 2009

Fingers are crossed that the race goes on and it's not toooo bitterly cold.

Maggs 5:18 PM, January 22, 2009

Uh...brrr...anything from those weather reports is way to cold for me to run in

Amy 5:28 PM, January 22, 2009

The words "bitterly" are written under one of the weather posts. Yikes! We'll send good weather vibes your way on Saturday.

trigirl82 5:28 PM, January 22, 2009

Brrr! That sucks!

Guess the ole 'bowl full of sunshine' shorts won't be making an appearance, eh? ;-)

Stef0115 5:47 PM, January 22, 2009

Try not to dwell on the possibility of it being canceled. It will go forward!! As a half marathon!!

Now the idea of running in weather that cold is, to me, freakin' KrayZee!! Separate issue altogether.

Formulaic 6:07 PM, January 22, 2009

Holy frozen bishops Batman! That's Freaking C.o.l.d!

Good luck to a hard ass RD.

teacherwoman 6:46 PM, January 22, 2009

OH I hope they don't cancel! But, it's one thing to run a 5K in those kind of conditions, but a HM? Yikes.

I am crossing my fingers!

Regarding the postscript, I don't see how even you could possibly top your latest installation, but I'm sure we'll all stay tuned....

What awaits us, Friday? The GROSS FOOT OLYMPICS?

The suspense is killing....

Regarding the upcoming event, imagine the PUBLIC, knowing what they know, that down there, a mere leg-length away, in just a thin cotton Drymax (c) sock and an old shoe, in the dark, THEY LURK....

t-odd 7:28 PM, January 22, 2009

It is called the Frozen Half Marathon after all. I am running it as well. I am hoping the cold weather will help my placing in my age group. When it gets that cold it almost doesn't matter. Just cover everything twice (and some "things" three times) and go!

Laura 7:59 PM, January 22, 2009

good luck...I know that our coach has said that there has not been a local event (Ontario, Canada) that has been cancelled because of weather. This is why we have to run outside in the crap weather we have been having.
Maybe I have been hoodwinked....

Eileen Swanson 8:03 PM, January 22, 2009

Hope it warms up for you guys....good luck and have tons fo fun! Oh and those pics of your foot made me puke ;-) HA

Kevin 8:08 PM, January 22, 2009

Burr!! Hopefully they run the race

Chloe 8:58 PM, January 22, 2009

Wow! Good luck with the weather! MN winters can be a total bummer. I lived in Owatonna for about 6 months other a winter. Ugh. There is only so far you can ran on a treadmill. So I can totally relate!! Blizard is on it's way! Time to stock up on wine and movies!!

Michelle Simmons 9:25 PM, January 22, 2009

If that weather report is not scaring the race director, I think you'll be on for Sunday. Seriously, how much worse can it get? Think of me though while you're freezing your ass off. I'll be running a half in Maui. Wearing a sports bra and shorts and dripping with sweat! :)

b 9:28 PM, January 22, 2009

I have my fingers crossed Steve that the weather people are way off on their weekend forecasting in your region!

TRI TO BE FUNNY 9:32 PM, January 22, 2009

Damn-I thought a low of 40 was cold for my Half-Marathon on Sunday!

RBR 11:20 PM, January 22, 2009

*sniff sniff* what is that I smell?

It the sweet smell of a half mary PR!

Have a great run! I would tell you to have fun, but that would be unecessary, you always have fun.

Sara 2:27 PM, January 23, 2009

Good Luck! Hopefully it is the full half and you get a wicked PR! Bundle Up!

RoadBunner 5:41 PM, January 23, 2009

I really hope Mother Nature cooperates!

sRod 7:45 AM, January 31, 2009

Oh Jesus. I'm freezing for you.
