Friday Funny 91: "Do You Have ANY Idea Who I Am?"

>> Friday, May 07, 2010

(Make sure to say the title of the post with your nose in the air like a bratty, snotty 19 year old "trust fund baby.")

Last weekend, I saw the April / May 2010 "Midwest Events Magazine" for the first time. It's a local magazine that shows up on free newstands (like at gyms, coffee shops, bookstores, etc). This is what the April / May 2010 issue looks like:

Inside, near the back, there's a spread that looks like this:

Sean Pease did a great little 3-page spread on me!! How cool is that?!? Here's the first page, and you can read the VERY kind words that Sean had to say as the intro for the article:

Awww, shucks. Thanks Sean!

Here's the next page:

Click the image for a larger (more readable) version

After you've read that, I'd like to point some things out:

• Cathy Yndestad (the USAT Female Triathlete of the Year) snapped that GREAT photo of me used on that page. It's from the Liberty Triathlon last year. Thanks Cathy! You're published! ;) (Oh, and on that note, Pharmie took the big photo on the first page, so she's a published photographer too!)

• If you didn't know the whole story of why my blog is called "Steve in a Speedo?! Gross!", now you do!

• Don't tease me for that swim time. We all start somewhere! I actually fondly look back on that race quite often.

• There are lots of "THANKS" to be said in the part about improving my swim. Coach Jen Harrison lets me swim her workouts with Julia, and it's been making me faster. So thanks Jen and Julia! And "the gang" that I refer to are all the people that sometimes swim with Julia: Kelly, Steve H, Steve T, Kathryn, Pam, Sara, Dan, and anyone else I might be forgetting!

• Now you know how Pharmie got her name as well! AND you know her real name!

• I doubt anyone knows the first point under "What is one (or two) things that most people wouldn't know about you?" But none of you should be surprised. ;)

Here's the final page of the interview:

Click the image for a larger (more readable) version

• Diet Root Beer TOTALLY counts! Right?...

• They edited out a part about Linsey Corbin's butt. Right after the last sentence in that section, there SHOULD be this:

In fact, if you search youtube for a video called "Linsey Corbin's Butt," you might just find it under my account. Jeez, sometimes I seem pretty creepy....

• My "oddest" race experience IS pretty odd. But I didn't even mention that there was a cat toy in my running shoe, so I did the 13.1 mile run with my big toe pushing up against one of Kermit's toys! Here's part 1 of that race report, and here's part 2.

• And here are 2 questions that Sean asked that got totally edited out:

Who would win in a fight....Mark Bongers vs. John Larson? [These are 2 pretty well-known local race directors: Mark runs Final Stretch, and John runs Team Ortho.] Sorry John, but I think Mark would take you. Those redheads... they're scrappy! Plus, the Team Ortho jerseys seem to have a target right on the middle of the chest. Ha!

Tell us about your 2 cats - names, personalities, unique characteristics. I'll let my wife field this one: "We've always joked that they actually have the personality of dogs. They love people, fetching, and rolling in gross things. Ella is twitchy and excitable like a young labrador. Kermit is low-key and docile like a bloodhound." Yes, one of our cats is named Kermit even though they are sisters. I told Sarah that I REALLY needed to name something "Kermit," and it was either one of our cats, or one of our (future) kids. So now we have a female cat named Kermit.

So if you're a local, pick up a copy of Midwest Events and look for that article! Thanks for the interview, Sean!

Happy Friday!

Interview

>> Thursday, February 05, 2009

Shannon just “interviewed” me, and I’m willing to return the favor to any other bloggers who would like to participate. Directions are at the bottom. Here’s what Shannon asked me:

1.) What is your dream race (already raced or never raced) and why (details)?
I think the "Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon" would be a blast. It's just SUCH an infamous swim (1.5 miles from the Alcatraz prison to the mainland)! That triathlon also has a shorter bike (18 miles) and a longer run (8 miles), so that's RIGHT up my ally!

2.) What is the biggest adversity in your life that you’re determined to overcome?
Well, YEARS ago (what seems like a lifetime), I conquered a pretty serious 3 year bout of depression. People sometimes wonder why I'm always so chipper, peppy, and happy - it's because I know what darkness REALLY is, and nothing I've been through since has been as tough as those years of my life.

Looking to the future, I'd love to overcome my nasty feet. Unfortunately, I think amputation is the only way this will happen...

3.) Biggie Smalls or Tupac?
I tend to prefer American cars, so I'll go with the Biggie. Although, I HAVE heard pretty good things about the Suzuki Tupac.

4.) What is one thing with 100% certainty you are committed too?
Maybe a few things:
• Pharmie, my lovely wife.
• Making people smile. (In the front of my current journal [Shut your face. So what. I have a journal. I've filled about 6 in the last couple of years. It's actually more of a place to tape movie stubs and stuff like that. You don't like it? Go suck an egg.] there's a fortune taped in with my writing underneath. See:

I know. I'm a big cheese ball.)
• Teaching. (I’m a professor during my day job.) I love sharing any tid-bit I may know that can help out someone else.
• Sometimes, I feel committed to triathlons, but that's just become a "healthy way of life," and not a chore or commitment.
• And sometimes, I feel committed to photography, but my inspiration has been coming and going.

5.) What one question would you ask Barack Obama if you have lunch with him next week?
Why isn't my life perfect yet?

Just kidding. I don't know if I have a specific question. I'd just love to chat over a meal and see what he's all about.

(Yes, #3 above is a joke. I know who they really are. They both own a line of carpet and tile stores, right?)

To play along:
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by giving you five questions. (I get to pick the questions.)
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview others in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

How It All Began

>> Monday, January 12, 2009

Pharmie has said for a while that I need to tell this little story. She says, “Everyone thinks you’re so speedy, but you started off not knowing what the heck you were doing.” Here’s how I started running.

I ran the mile for the “Presidential Physical Fitness Test” in Phy Ed during my first semester of High School (Fall 1995). I was the first to finish, but it was a deplorable time. I hit the line and knew I was about to die. Right behind me was a new friend, Tim, who was currently out for cross country. He told me, “Not bad Steve. You should come out for track in the spring.”

I thought about it. I had never been part of a team. I played 2 summers of tennis in middle school, and about a month of basketball in 5th grade. I thought I’d give track a whirl.

But I’m no dummy. I wanted to be “ready” for the first day of track practice. So sometime over Christmas break (around New Year 1996), I went out for my first training run. I thought, “I think I’ll run to the corner and back.” Now, I grew up in the middle of nowhere on a tiny gravel road, so for all you know, “the corner” could have been a mile or more away...

...but “the corner” was about a quarter mile away. Oooh, feel the burn. I hopped on the gravel road, noted the time on my watch (so I could track my time), and took off. I barely made it that quarter mile - I was huffing and puffing when I got there. I don’t remember what my time was, but I remember being pleased. I took a moment to revel in the great workout, and then I did a run/walk/run on the quarter mile back home.

The first day of track practice rolls around, and Coach puts me in a group of other newbies. “You guys: head down 22, go around the golf course, and come back. That’s 2 miles.” Ummm, AROUND the golf course? TWO MILES? Coach, you’re insane.

On that first 2 mile run, I got half way through (to the far corner of the golf course) before I had to stop and walk. I was still ahead of a sophomore, so I was pretty proud of that. Over that last mile home, I think I stopped to walk about 5 times. But I made it back to the school.

One official workout down, with no idea how many thousands of workouts lie in my future.

Here was the team photo from that time in my life (my freshman year of track: 1996):

I didn’t get SUPER awkward until later that year. Here’s the team cross country photo from sophomore year (where I’m ALL hair and glasses):

I started getting speedier, but I was fighting injuries. (Huh, what’s new?) Here’s an appearance in the local paper during the next track season:

Sweet. I forgot we broke our H.S. indoor record.

(People think I eat A LOT these days. But that’s so “2009 Steve” has bigger legs than “1996 Steve.” Did you SEE those twigs in that photo above?!?)

One last newspaper clipping from the next cross country season (my last season as a runner). Here are the sibling pairs out for CC from our small high school:

Look to the far right. In the back row. That’s Pharmie and I right next to one another. I still had big hair. Pharmie still had bangs:

After that season of cross country (fall 1997), I threw in the towel. I was consistently injured, and I was frustrated. So I stopped running for about 5 years. (I didn’t completely stop running: I would run 2-3 miles about 4 times a year.) And then in 2002 or 2003, I started running a little more. Then biking a few years later. Then duathlons and triathlons in 2006.

The rest, as they say, is history on my blog.

The Moral? We sometimes need to step back and take a look at the big picture. We get too caught up in the necessity of smaller victories: How was this 5K slower than my last? Why did that run feel so tough when it seemed like a walk in the park 3 weeks ago? Etc, etc. We don’t look far enough back to see where we’ve come from. So step back and take a look at YOUR big picture.

What does your “big picture” say? Mine says this:

I can remember: When a 1/4 mile run was the workout to prepare me for a whole season. When a 2 mile run was a worse fate than death. When I was nothing but hair and glasses.

If you have an embarrassing photo and story from when you started running / swimming / biking / tri-ing, post it on your blog and let me know. I LOVE hearing self-deprecating stories and photos from when we were all newbies! In fact, in about a month, I think I’ll officially hold a contest for the “Best Newbie Story & Embarrassing Photo Combo” on my blog. So dig up that first 5K photo, or your first triathlon where you wore your bike helmet backward, or when you started swimming with braces and glasses that took up your entire face, etc, etc. There will be more to come on a blog-wide contest, with the winner determined by votes from the public! Ooh, this should be FUN!!

In the meantime, remember where you’ve been. Remember where you’ve come from. We’ve all come so very far. Never lose sight of that!

Thanks for all the well-wishes everyone! I think I’m finally feeling better - yesterday things started looking up. Today, I might try something other than bread, Honey Nut Cheerios, or generic Frosted Flakes (that's been my nutrition for the last 4 days). Wish me luck!

As a “thanks for stopping by” gift, here’s a drawing I recently found that I made in 2nd grade. It shows what I want to be when I grow up. Yep, that’s me as a priest.

5 Sexy Things About Me

>> Tuesday, November 25, 2008

It’s 4 am. I can’t sleep. I just might be up for the day. So I thought I’d share 5 things about me. Oh, and they’re not really “sexy” - I’m just sleep deprived, so leave me alone.

1: I carry way too much crap in my pockets. I washed my jeans this weekend, so I had to empty my pockets. This is what came out:
- 1 pencil
- 3 pens
- 3 Sharpies
- 2 flash drives
- chapstick
- plastic whistle
- checkbook
- wallet
- $8.89 in change (enough to feed a starving child for 5 weeks)

2: I eat Totino’s Pizzas in EXACTLY 32 bites. (My favorite is the sausage or the combo.) I cut the pizza into 8 equal slices. Then I eat each slice like this:
1. Cut off the tip, eat.
2. Cut more off the same end, eat.
3. Cut the remainder in half, eat piece closest to me.
4. Eat remaining bite.

3: For how “techie” I am, I don’t run with an iPod, HR monitor, or GPS. I’m pretty old-school when it comes to some of these things. When I run, I want to be alone with my thoughts, so I just go and run. I don’t need to know my current pace, how many calories my left pinky has burned, how many times I’ve farted in the last mile, how much saliva I’m producing, etc. (that’s all stuff your Garmin can tell you, right?) I run a route that has stoplights every half-mile, so I can (roughly) check my splits. But otherwise, I’m running free. And for how much I rely on my computer, I track all my workouts (swim, bike, run, lift, stretch, etc) on paper. Here’s a week out of my training log from just before my half-ironman a few months back (heavy training):

And here’s last week, with more cross-training than swimming or biking:

4: This is unrelated to me, but have you seen the new “Doritos Collisions?” How sweet is that?!? Two great flavors in one bag! All the “pizza” powder gets on the “ranch” chips and vice versa! It’s heaven! It’s like having late-night sex WHILE watching Conan O’Brien!

5: I’d like to get an M-Dot tattoo, but first I need to get a different tattoo. In case you didn’t know, I’m a photographer and a college photo professor (that’s why I had 3 Sharpies in my pocket in photo #1: students always need to label the CDs they are turning in). I’ve always said that my first tattoo will be the shutter speed dial from my first camera. I still think this would be nerdy cool as my first tattoo:

Call me a geek. I can take it. I know it’s true.

Also, I think a few of us are going to be running the Giving Thanks 5K on Thanksgiving morning around Lake Como here in St. Paul. It’s an easy 5K course, but both races I’ve done on it have eaten me up! We’ll see how this one goes! Happy Thanksgiving (if we don’t talk before Thursday)!!!

Tagged: Seven Things

>> Friday, February 29, 2008

Tracie tagged me, and now I need to share 7 random or weird facts about myself. Here it goes:

• I created a video application for Team EvoTri that didn’t make the cut. You can check it out by clicking here (it’s really not that exciting, so don’t bother). What may be MORE exciting is the Blooper Reel. Yesterday, I put all these foibles together to create 70 seconds of mistakes (huh...I think that’s also the way mom refers to the night I was conceived). Check it out:

(If you can’t view the video above, see it directly on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LlVzWvRyzc.)

• I was born on Friday the 13th. When I mention that to people, the most common reaction is, “Oh, that explains a lot.” Jerks.

• I started teaching college a few days after I turned 24. My first class had an average age of 31. Now, about 3 years later, I’ve taught a total of 34 courses at 4 different colleges/universities in the Twin Cities area.

• When I was younger, I thought I was Jewish.

• Two years ago, I said I’d never do an Ironman. Then, I did one. Years earlier, I said I’d never run a marathon. Now, I’m signed up for Grandmas Marathon in June. I guess I’ve learned never to say never.

• I don’t drink much alcohol. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever been drunk. But I make up for that by pooping a lot. I mean, A LOT. I really don’t know what those 2 things have to do with one another, but, well, there ya go.

• I carry a tweezers around in my wallet for those random splinters life sends my way. Seriously. Ask me when you see me - I'll show you. It comes in handy.

Now, as the rules say, I must tag 7 others or my face will explode (or something like that). So, Big Mike, J-Wim, Jeremy, Jumper, Julia, Mister P, and Danielle in Iowa, consider yourselves all tagged.

Tag, I'm It

>> Monday, February 05, 2007

I’ve been double tagged (just like my wife), by Lance Notstrong and TriTeacher. The first task? List 6 strange or weird things about yourself. Being I recently posted “100 Things About Me” and most of those were strange, I thought I’d put a little twist on this post. This will be 6 strange or weird things about me that are athletic related. So, in no particular order, here we go:

• I drink like a CAMEL! I am a hydrate-o-holic. Water, PowerAid, Gatorade, diluted lemon flavored Carbo-Pro - they’re all good. I even have to bring 2 full water bottles to a 1 hour spinning class! Here I am just before a SPRINT Triathlon:

• I have no ass, and therefore, on long bike rides I wear 2 pairs of bike shorts. Don’t laugh. It works.

• The night before my first ever triathlon, I was at a party where I over-indulged in guacamole. The next morning, my bowels weren’t happy. I did the nasty in the bathroom 3 times in the half hour before starting the race. I LITERALY ran from the toilet to the start of the swim. It all ended OK.

• I’m getting really frustrated by my bum left knee. I’m not running at all, I’ve stopped biking/spinning, I’m stretching it out but not over working it, I’m seeing a physical therapist and doing all the stretches/exercises that she’s recommending, and it’s just not getting better. My IM dreams already seem out of reach. Update on this soon. Grrrrr...

• I like my toe cages. I don’t want to get clipless pedals. I was so happy to see a few toe cages on the bikes at IM WI 2006.

• I’m looking forward to shaving my entire body mid-summer in preparation for IM WI. Well, maybe “looking forward to it” is strong language. It’s more like I’m just curious. Sarah is too.

The second task is to answer the following 6 triathlon questions:

1. Describe a memory from your first triathlon ever.
Well, I’ll go with the guacamole/diarrhea incident that you’ve already read about earlier in this post.

2. Describe a memory from your most recent triathlon.
Mmmmmmm....... the Swedish pancakes at the end of the Chisago Lakes Triathlon. Best post triathlon food ever.

3. What’s the most embarrassing thing that has ever happened to you in a triathlon?
For all the embarrassing and stupid things that I do (and that I have shared with you over these past few months), I really don’t have anything very embarrassing from a triathlon. I’m just as surprised as you! I mean, I’ve peed at the start of the swim during 2 triathlons, but who hasn’t?

4. What’s the most thrilling thing that has ever happened to you in a triathlon?
Completing the 0.93 mile swim at my first Olympic distance tri and still remaining upright!

5. What is something that you discovered about yourself by doing triathlons?
I can NOT swim a straight line if my life depended on it.

6. What is “The Big Goal” that you are working towards?
Um, duh, IM WI 2007. And a rock hard body. (First off, let’s start with a healthy knee!)

Time to pass on the cooties. So, I’m going to tag XT4, Spokane Al, and TriShannon (Shannon, I see you’ve already done one of these, so your job is to do the other one). Tag, you’re it. Do either one of these, or both of these if you’d like. Go to it.

100 Things About Me

>> Monday, December 11, 2006

I tried to keep this fun and honest. I hope you don’t get bored with such a large dose of Steve. Some of these are frightfully honest, especially the higher numbers. You have been warned.

1. I’m way more fun than you.

2. I’m probably cooler too.

3. Wait, #2 is a lie. I’m the opposite of cool.

4. Great, now I wasted #3.

5. Crap, there goes #4. Back on track...

6. I’m addicted to infomercials.

7. Although I have 2 cats, I consider myself more of a dog person.

8. One of those cats is named Kermit, because I told Sarah it was either the name of a pet or our first-born son.

9. Classic Looney Tunes were the best thing on TV. Chuck Jones was a genius!

10. Americas Funniest Home Videos is my favorite TV show currently on TV. Seriously.

11. I’ve had 7 years of piano lessons.

12. But now can only play Yankee Doodle with one finger.

13. I was born on Friday the 13th. Some people say that explains a lot.

14. I don’t let Sarah touch my navel. When I do, she thinks it’s a party.

15. When I was in second grade, I wanted to be a priest.

16. Then, when I was 8, I thought I was Jewish. I was wrong.

17. I started teaching my first college course a month after my 24th birthday.

18. The average age of my students in that class was around 30 years old.

19. I like being mistaken for a student when I teach.

20. I also like the chatter I overhear before the start of the first day of class: "Is THAT our professor? He looks so young!"

21. If I were a better writer, I wouldn’t need to make photos.

22. I’ve never done any sort of drugs.

23. If I were to do drugs, my drug of choice would be Chipotle Burritos.

24. I don’t drink coffee (can you imagine me caffeinated?!).

25. I’ve taken one puff on a cigarette. I was 17. It was nasty.

26. I don’t spend enough time with my friends.

27. I’m a momma’s boy.

28. Everything about the photographic process excites me. Except making contact sheets.

29. I poop more than anyone I know: usually 4-5 times per day.

30. Most of that poop floats.

31. When I watch CSI and they show the image through the eye-piece of a camera that is taking pictures of evidence, I always yell at the TV because their aperture and shutter speed settings never make any sense with the flash they are using.

32. When I was young, I tried to jump off of a moving 4-wheeler so I could run along the side of it. I ended up belly-sliding across the gravel road. I nearly lost my right nipple.

33. Don’t read #75 without reading the 2 before it or it will seem really, really dirty.

34. I worked for 4 summers in different corporate hog barns artificially inseminating sows in heat. I’m the surrogate father of thousands of delicious baby pigs.

35. I’ve been growing hairy patches on my shoulders that I’m not proud of.

36. During my first 2 months of college, I didn’t think I could hack it.

37. During my first 2 months of grad school, I didn’t think I could hack it.

38. My mother-in-law’s homemade salsa will cure whatever ails you (it works for me!).

39. I’m never fully satisfied with my photography, although I fake it when I need to talk about my work.

40. I’m a gentle and giving lover.

41. I always shower, not bathe, after wearing brand new socks. Otherwise those in-between-the-toe fuzzies are floating all over the tub. Nasty.

42. I’m grateful for everything.

43. I carry a tweezers in my wallet in case of slivers or splinters. Is that weird?

44. I love movies, but rarely see any.

45. I had sex for the first time on my wedding night. Yes, really.

46. Pink is one of my favorite colors.

47. So is 18% grey.

48. I can’t talk on the phone and do something else at the same time. So if you ever call me, you have my undivided attention.

49. Triathlons have helped my sex life (hard body and more endurance) and hurt my sex life (too tired from training).

50. I try to be polite - society as a whole needs to be more polite.

51. I hate politics.

52. I never want to affiliate myself with just one specific political party.

53. I don’t have any tattoos, but I’d like to get one that is an image of my first camera’s shutter speed dial. Nerdy, I know.

54. I’ve been known to eat entire large, sausage, Papa John’s pizzas in one sitting.

55. I drink water like a camel.

56. And, therefore, piss like a racehorse.

60. I can balance my body in a few strange positions.

61. My penis and I are good friends.

62. I love to laugh and to make others laugh.

63. When I fart in bed, I fluff the covers. I don’t want to baste in my own stink.

64. George Clooney. I’m just saying...if I had too, it’d be with George Clooney. Or Jamie Foxx.

65. I’m pretty sure Paris Hilton is the anti-Christ. And Lindsey Lohan is a living, breathing STD. And Britney Spears is simply trash.

66. Riding bike without a helmet is thrilling! Just like having sex with an old, warty, seasoned prostitute without using a condom is thrilling! Come on people, wear a helmet when on a bike or motorcycle! Don’t be stupid.

67. My favorite physical activity that I can see myself doing the longest is lifting weights.

68. Second: biking.

69. Third: running.

70. I just recently realized that I’ve never been Mom and Dads favorite. I’ve come to terms with that.

71. If you would have told me 2 years ago that I’d be training for an Ironman Triathlon right now, I would have punched you in the stomach and stolen your purse.

72. Extremely attractive people make me nervous.

73. I got my first cavity when I was 25.

74. While waiting for the novocaine to take effect, I taught the dental hygienist all about her new digital camera.

75. She was grateful and therefore gentle in my mouth.

76. My feet have become increasingly stinky in the past few years.

77. Sometimes, my day revolves around what time The Simpson’s, Top Model, or This Old House are on TV. That’s sad, I know.

78. I just won an office pool at MCAD for picking the winner of Top Model. I’m going for it all next year too. Watch out Continuing Studies office!

79. When I was little, I thought it was "Duck, Duck, RAY Duck," not "Duck, Duck, GRAY Duck." I realized I was wrong when I was about 21. I felt like my entire childhood was a lie.

80. It may look like I cut my own hair, but I don’t.

81. I believe in God.

82. I also believe in Karma.

83. My parents almost named me Jeff. But I’m happy with Steve (named after my Great Grandfather, Steve Dulas).

84. I’ve never met a man named Steve who isn’t a least a little quirky. Have you?

85. I was 18th in state on the Horticulture team in FFA in high school.

86. I married the woman who received 1st in state.

87. I can’t stand runners who listen to their iPods so loud that they can’t hear a polite "On your left" while on the trail.

88. I’m cheap.

89. I make groin-grabbingly good cinnamon French toast. Stop by on a Sunday morning and help yourself to a piece.

90. My current favorite combination of fountain soda is 70% Diet Coke, 25% Cherry Coke, and 5% Lemonade.

91. My favorite vegetable is sausage.

92. My sister-in-law has been living with us for a few months, and in the past I’ve been known to get her mixed up with Sarah. This could spell disaster. (picture naked Steve jumping into the wrong bed.)

93. I split my head open on a ceiling fan in Honduras when I was 17. I bled over a toilet while my friends went for help. Here’s a photo of that toilet.

94. I’m an obsessive list maker; in my mind, if it’s not on a list, it doesn’t exist.

95. I don’t care for winter in Minnesota, but I need the freeze to bring everything full-circle. It makes springtime special.

96. Sometimes, I’m kind of a jerk.

97. And a little cocky.

98. And a giant nerd.

99. Knowing all you now know about me, I hope we can still be friends.

100. I like receiving comments (who doesn’t?). Please leave me a note if you’d like. Thanks for reading all (or some) of this!

2016 highlights: I spent a lot of this year injured (and then slowly/smartly coming back from that injury), so I didn't race a lot. That's really what I remember about 2016. My favorite racing memories are doing things with my boys: my first race with both of them at Lake Johanna, getting lots of high-fives from them during Rocky's Run 6K CC race, and racing with my youngest and my nephew at the Fast Before the Feast (all the while watching my beard grow, apparently...):

My view at Lake Johanna 4 Mile, my boys giving high-fives
