Swim Meet and State Fencing

>> Thursday, March 05, 2026

Last week and this past weekend were BUSY. I posted this a week ago with the following 4 photos:

Diving skill is genetic as proved by Charlie’s first dive. (I’m a HORRIBLE diver. 🤷🏼‍♂️🙃) But he got better with each event last night! He earned 2 “personal best” ribbons in the 25 and 50 free, taking FOUR SECONDS off of his best 25 yard time from last year! He knocked his 50 free time from 49 seconds down to 46.55 last night.

Here are the pics that corrospond with that writing, and you can see Charlie get better dive-after-dive:

Looking much better by this point!

Then on Saturday, Henry had TEAM State Fencing. His 4-man high school team fell short and was 5th out of 7 in the state.

The following day was INDIVIDUAL State Fencing, and my wife and I got up early and got out to the suburbs at 6:30 to help set up the gym for fencing (as the team tournament was in a different location than this individual tournament):

Just starting to mark the strips with tape.

My wife and Kundan checking for straightness.

Then it was a big day of fencing! I posted this:

The state fencing tournament marks the end of fencing season! Henry faced a tough pool, and got through it with 3 wins and 2 losses. In bracket play, he earned a bye in the first round, and won 15–10 in the second round. He faced his (tall) buddy Hudson in the third round where they started evenly (4-4 at one point) before Hudson ran away with the win.

Henry finished 33rd in the state tournament 2 years ago, 23rd last year, and 13th today! Progress!

And I love this first pic of Henry getting a touch on the opponent's shoulder:

Busier gym!

Henry and Hudson after Hudson destroyed him in bracket play.

Both boys are still doing "club" fencing, but the official high school season is done for Henry. He likes fencing for his club a lot, so hopefully he can make some strides over this next year and do even better next year in his sophomore year of high school fencing!

Instagram of the Day: Big Fencing Weekend!!

>> Wednesday, February 25, 2026

The boys had their first "team" tournaments this past weekend, and it was the most fun we've had at a fencing tournament before. I posted these 10 photos online Sunday night along with this text:

HELLAVA DAY!!
.
Charlie fenced in his first 3-man team tournament ever in the “under 14” age group. There were 7 teams, and his team made it to the GOLD MEDAL MATCH where they were up against the number one seed and ready to get murdered. But when Charlie fenced for his 3rd time that match (as the 8th out of 9 bouts - each of the 3 fencers fence 3 times), he scored 13 touches to put his team in the lead for the first time all match! And his teammate Lucas held on to the win with a final score of 45-42 with 3 seconds left! These boys were ECSTATIC!
.
Then I wisked him away to a swim meet, where he had already missed one of his events. He made it moments before the 50 free (like 2 minutes before, seriously), so he dove in to race! He also raced a relay an hour later.
.
Then it was back to cheer on Henry for his team fencing tournament. His team (named “Small, Medium, and Large” for obvious reasons) won their first and lost their second, so they fenced for bronze and won. So they left with 3rd place medals! (Pictured with 1st and 2nd in the last pic.) Big fun day!!

Charlie's Team: Lucas, Charlie, and Jacob.

45 to 42 with 3.39 seconds left!

Getting their medals.

Then we shot across St. Paul and barely made it for Charlie's second swim event (after missing the first). I took a photo of his events when we were walking to the pool from my car, and the next photo of him swimming was 7 minutes later! REALLY tight!

Diving in.

Back at fencing, here's team "Small, Medium, and Large" after they fenced for 3rd place!

Getting their medals.

Top 3 teams in Henry's division: left is 3rd, middle 3 are 2nd, and right is 1st.

The format in team fencing is totally different. In a "normal" tournament, the fencers get split into groups of 5-7 and they all fence each other in their "pools" in short bouts to 5 touches (or 3 minutes). That determines their rank for the "direct elimination" bracket (or "D.E.": a normal "March Madness"-like single elimination bracket) where they fence to 15 touches (in 3 periods of 3 minutes each).

In a team tournament, there's no "pool" bouts, just a big bracket. And there are 9 bouts in each round: each fencer on the team fences the 3 people on the other team (rotating so everyone gets rest). The scoring is more interesting: the first pairing goes until someone has 5 touches, so lets say it's 3-5 at the end of that. The second pairing goes until a team has 10 total touches. So if the first team that only had 3 touches has a good fencer here, they could get 7 touches during that round to be ahead 10-6 (if the 2nd team only got 1 touch, for example). So that's how Charlie took his team from way behind as the 8th fencer: they were going to 40 touches, and his team was behind 27-35, but Charlie got 13 touches while the other team only got 4 to make it 40-39 at the end of his bout.

Oh, and a few weeks ago, I posted this about a high school tournament that Henry was in:

Henry had his best showing in a fencing tournament today in Rochester! He won ALL of his bouts in pool play, earning himself a 4th overall rank going into the direct elimination bracket. In the bracket, he earned a bye in the 1st round for placing so well, won in the 2nd round 15-5, and had a tight bout in the 3rd, losing 12-15. A few more touches would have earned him his first medal. Dang. He finished with his first top-10 finish ever in 9th place (out of 35).

Pool results. Look in Henry's row: all green "V5s" meaning he won all
with 5 touches. Looking down the 2nd column shows Henry's opponent's touches.

Ranked FOURTH after pool play!! Highest ever!!
(And the highest "unranked" fencer too.)

In the D.E. bout.

So he was just a few touches from making the top 8. And because he scored so well in pool play, he was ranked first among "the rest," which means he was 9th overall.

Henry's Fencing Tournament in Chicago!

>> Wednesday, October 22, 2025

We pulled into our driveway at 1 a.m. on Monday morning after a long weekend of fun in Wisconsin and just outside of Chicago (in Libertyville). Here are some Instagram posts to tell our story! Here's the first post from Friday (about what happened on Thursday and Friday):

Spent last night in Wisconsin Dells on our way to 2 days of fencing for Henry near Chicago! Lots of water rides, chlorine-burned eyes, sock-stealing Charlie (to use in a play place), and a 5+ mile run with Henry!

Finishing up a fun slide!

Putting my socks on Charlie so he could play in a play place.

Henry and I in the middle of our run together!

On the way to Chicago from the Dells.

Then a post from Saturday morning:

Henry had his first of two days of fencing at a regional tournament outside of Chicago this morning. In pool play, he beat one guy 5-0 in 22 seconds! But then in the next bout, he faced a 6’ fencer who fences for Yale who smoked him 0-5. 🤷🏼‍♂️ We laughed because when it came to his “direct elimination” bracket, he was up against someone from the metro area he had fenced a few times before in local tournaments - we all didn’t need to drive 6 hours to fence near Chicago. 😂 He was happy with how he did, and is hoping to do better in tomorrow’s events. ❤️🤺

Waiting to warm up.

Big venue! 6 basketball courts were used to house 28 fencing strips.

In the middle of his 5-0 match! (You can see his score is 3-0, and the red light
going off is signaling his 4th touch - notice his super bent blade getting the touch!)

Sunday morning (as we were getting ready for Henry's 2nd day of fencing), I posted this:

We drove into Chicago yesterday afternoon after Henry was done fencing. We saw “the bean,” rode the 200’ ferris wheel on Navy Pier, and had some deep dish at Pizanos (not to be confused with the old Paisanos that used to be on Selby and Dale in St. Paul). Final day of fencing this afternoon!!

We missed seeing "the bean" when we were in Chicago 2 years ago because it was fenced off.

Selfie in the bean.

It looks like Charlie is floating/morphing into the bean. :)

Getting full!

Finally, I posted this on Monday:

Henry’s 2nd day of fencing yesterday near Chicago went well!

In pool play, he fenced average. He didn’t win any bouts like he did 2 days ago, but he had the top ranked fencer coming into the tournament in his pool, and Henry got 3 touches on him! (Henry lost 3-5.) Only one other person got 3 touches on him, and everyone else got fewer touches. This was BIG for Henry! This kid was kind of a jerk, so Henry was happy to have helped keep him from being ranked 1st going into direct elimination by getting 3 touches on him. 😄

Then in direct elimination, Henry did something he’s only ever done once before: he WON A BOUT IN BRACKET PLAY! He took down someone ranked just above him 15-5!! He looked GOOD!!

Henry’s “reward” for winning in the DE bracket was that his second bout was against the fencer who was seeded 1st after pool play. Henry held his own at the start of the bout (with a score of 4-7 at one point), but none of us had any delusions that he was going to move past this point. He lost 5-15 but gained some good experience, didn’t finish at the bottom, and got some good feedback from his coaches.

Then at 7 pm last night, we hopped in the car just outside of Chicago, and finally pulled into our driveway at 1 am this morning. We’re all still doing fine, but tomorrow might hit like a cement truck. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Nice work Henry!! 🎉❤️🇺🇸🤺

Henry getting a touch (to the chest) in his pool.

And the rest of these are from his winning bout in the direct elimination bracket.

The boys woke up just fine on Monday morning! Everyone slept in the car from 9 pm until we got home - Sarah woke up when I had to get gas about 40 mins from home, and then she was awake the rest of the way with me (from about 12:20 to 1:00 a.m.). I actually got up at 5:30 a.m. after less than 4 hours of sleep to go for a long run. And I survived! Fun and busy weekend!!
