Final Big Workouts Before IM NO 70.3

>> Monday, March 30, 2009

Nothing too big to report. I’m tapering. And I’ve been missing some of my taper workouts, but hey, it’s “just taper,” right? (I’ve been busy with teaching things [grading a ton of projects] and house things [remodeling our guest room]). Anyway, here are my “normal” totals from the month of February:

All of February:
- Swim:
9200 yards
- Bike: over 9 hours on trainer/spinning (including a 3:20 spin class)
- Run: 47.5 miles (including a half-marathon)

Compare that with my 2 hardcore weeks of training for IM NO. I told myself the middle 2 weeks of March were my “hit it hard” weeks. Here are the totals from just those weeks:

Middle 2 weeks of March:
- Swim:
7200 yards
- Bike: 3 hours on trainer/spinning and 100 miles outside
- Run: 30 miles

I think I’m ready. I’m pretty sure I can PR, but my main focus is just to finish the race - just get another Half IM under my belt. If I can bust out a nice time, then GREAT! If not, no biggie; I’ll STILL have a fun time (you know me!)! We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

In food-related taper news, last night I grilled up a storm. Here’s my plate loaded with a turkey burger (with cheese, high-quality bacon-bits, grilled orange bell pepper, and lettuce), grilled shrimp (3 kinds: cajun, garlic, and “sandwich seasoning” from Penzeys Spices), a turkey dog, and pasta salad:

(I went back for more pasta salad and a LOT more shrimp!) I also grilled asparagus for the girls, but I won’t touch that stuff with a 10-foot pole.

woa! You live in St. Paul! I'm currently training for the half-marathon in Minneapolis on May 31st- I got your blog tip from Amber. I'll be checking in for any advice you have!

That food looks good! I always eat asparagus, despite the consequences. You'll do great in the race this weekend. Good luck!

Best of luck on your race!! That shrimp looks YUMMY. Haven't had shrimp in years but now I might have to.

The course is ripe for a PR with it being so flat and fast. We swam the swim leg on Wednesday. Water was a nice 70 degrees. Going to be a great race. Looking forward to getting to meet you guys if possible.

I always wonder about people who skip asparagus only because it makes your pee smell funny . . . are other people routinely smelling your pee?

I love the stuff, musty pee or not. Yummy!

Unknown 2:20 PM, March 30, 2009

The only thing you can do wrong with a taper is do too much training, so if you miss a couple of workouts it's not a problem.

Good luck with the race!

Brian 2:41 PM, March 30, 2009

asparagus is awesome. you're missing out. besides, you can pee and not flush to leave the scent for all to enjoy. :)

good luck

duchossois 2:53 PM, March 30, 2009

Don't miss too many taper work-outs. Even though the workload is reduced, these are important for maintenance. Good Luck!

triguyjt 2:59 PM, March 30, 2009

love your art work!!!.. truth be told...well prepared, grilled asparagus is fantastic and I will smell the pee next time to see if it really is bad...haha

and what the heck is "high quality bacon bits"???

mthead 3:23 PM, March 30, 2009

maybe I'm crazy, but I don't think pee EVER smells good.

Marcy 3:27 PM, March 30, 2009

What?! I makes your pee stink?!

Missy 4:12 PM, March 30, 2009

WHY does it do that to pee??? I just never could figure that one out. NOLA is going to be great! What a time. OH and Penzeys spices are thee best!

GoBigGreen 5:04 PM, March 30, 2009

you know that feeding a group asparagus is really quite a fun "party" game. Some do, some dont:)
Good luck!

Charisa 6:32 PM, March 30, 2009

Good luck this weekend - have fun!

T 6:56 PM, March 30, 2009

still one of the best things i've ever read in a magazine:

"you are what you eat. nature's example? asparagus pee."

Kate 7:15 PM, March 30, 2009

That is the only reason my husband won't eat asparagus. He thought that drawing was hilarious. Of course he did.

Unknown 8:43 PM, March 30, 2009

That made me hungry. Good luck!

Run For Life 9:03 PM, March 30, 2009

Foooooood. Now I want some grilled shrimp!

CoachLiz 10:14 PM, March 30, 2009

I have never noticed that asparagus makes your pee stink. Sadly, I would have gone hungry at your BBQ grilled dinner. I HATE MY FOOD ALLERGIES!!! Everything on that plate except the Turkey burger patty, minus the cheese and "high quality bacon bits" would have sent my stomach into a tailspin.

Have fun getting all of your gear ready and make sure to get all of those projects graded.

FLATOUT JIM 4:34 AM, March 31, 2009

As long as you can stay away from the hurricanes, you'll be fine.

Jess 7:17 AM, March 31, 2009

I had asparagus last night! Mmmmmm....

Formulaic 11:06 AM, March 31, 2009

Good luck on your race!

Man! Those shrimp look good!

Great! Now I am hungry

akshaye 12:26 PM, March 31, 2009

Sweet.. now I am hungry. At least its time for lunch here!

Good luck with the PR.

Anonymous,  1:27 PM, March 31, 2009

I love asparagus. Just flush quick and you don't notice the smell.

jen 1:32 PM, March 31, 2009

Good luck in NO!!!
