Big Race Plans for my Wife and I This Summer!

>> Monday, March 04, 2013

Pharmie and I do NOT have our complete summer race schedule planned out yet, but we have some fun news. She just registered for the Olympic Distance tri at the Trinona Triathlon which contains one of Bicycling Magazine’s “Top 100 Climbs” up Garvin Heights:

And I'm registered for the brutal 3.5 mile Time Trial that goes along the bluff and then straight up Garvin Heights hill:

The fun part of this news is that I'm helping to get the word on on the Trinona Triathlon, so we were given free entries! The Trinona folks just want me to post about it. (And duh... I THINK I'll have a race report and a bunch of photos come June. I tend to do that. Often.) I'll also have a discount code that I'll be sharing in a few days in case your thinking about doing it. I'm not being paid to do this - I don't get any sort of "kick back" for anyone who I get to register. I'm just helping to promote this awesome race that won back-to-back "Race of the Year" from over 60 Minnesota multi-sport races. (And in case you forgot, I did this race last year: here's a bit from pre-race, and here's my full race report.)

They've given me some gear to giveaway tomorrow!! Check back for that!

So I know it's a short bike race, but it's time to start hitting the bike to be ready for that Time Trial. My wife's been great about spending some decent time on the trainer all winter:

Reading her iPad while on her bike. She didn't know I was taking this. I'm creepy like that.

Once I officially signed up, I had the urge to get on my bike. It's like when I signed up for a swim meet and then posted about how much that got me in the pool last month. But when I got on my bike, it was making strange sounds shortly. I investigated and found a 4-inch blow-out in my back tire:

Oops. No trainer ride tonight.

Remember, I'll have a GIVEAWAY up tomorrow from the folks at Trinona!! Check back.

I have a couple IM questions for the two of you...

There is no way I could read an iPad while biking. It would have to have the ultimate water (read: sweat) protector on it. I usually watch movies, but my computer is set at a safe distance beyond my sweat slick range.

Best of luck getting the training in.

Kurt, I'm with you - I'm a sweaty beast! She's just been doing a lot of base work, so she hasn't been working up a massive sweat.

Brandon, shoot me an e-mail or just leave a big comment, and I'll get back to you!

Cool! Better get back on that bike. 3.5 miles is not very far for a TT at all, so you better be flying!

Just signed up last week for both the TT and Olympic. I did both in 2012 and its an awesome race. I remember seeing you on the run course (the shorts definitely make you stick out :)) Can't use the promo code but I like free stuff :)

Greg, see you there!!!

And Borsch, there's a funny story about that.... About 2.5 years ago, I put on an "old" regular tire for the winter on the trainer. Well, I never changed it come summer, so I rode on the "old" tire from the trainer all summer. And then again that winter. And then again the next summer. And then again last winter. And then again this past summer. So it's high time this tire finally died! I think I have another "old" tire lying around... we'll see how long that one lasts... :)
