My Sons' 4th 5K!

>> Monday, April 29, 2024

My wife and I did the Get in Gear 10K this past weekend. I'll have my race report in the next day or 2.

But it was also Henry and Charlie's 4th 5K! We all got to the race site and my boys got in line for the porta potties:

Yes, Charlie asked if he could race in a top hat! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The boys hung out in our team tent for 20 minutes while my wife and I started our 10K. Then they shedded their coats and got in line for the 5K.

Henry had been out on a few more training runs than Charlie (but not as many as last year before their FIRST 5K) and was hoping to PR. His first 2 5Ks were in the 25s, and he got down to 24:48 last fall during his 3rd 5K, which was JUST under 8:00 pace. He told my wife and I pre-race that he was going to try to go out at 7:00 pace, and we said "Ooooooh nooooooo!!" We said to try to hold maybe 2 miles at 8:00 pace, and then speed up if he's got more in the tank! He didn't fully listen to us, and ran the first mile in 7:17, but then held an aveage of 7:21s for the full 5K to finish not only sub-25 or sub-24 but sub-23 with a 22:50 finish!!! (80th out of 1234, and 11 out of 103 in the 9-13 male age group.) He ran so fast I missed him at the line!

Topless Henry running up to the finish from his finish line video!

A hot runner like his dad. Nice job Henry!!

I finished my 10K and ran back to find my boys. After missing Henry, I spotted Charlie a bit quicker than I thought I would! He saw me and ran up to me showing me his watch because he was doing so well!

Hand already on his watch to show it to me!
(And still in the top hat!)

"Dad... look at my time so far!!"

Charlie was hoping for sub-40 (easy goal) and ended up running 33:00! His PR was just over 30:00, so not near that, but he knew that wouldn't happen with the lesser training lately. (He was 540th overall, and 63rd in the same age group as Henry.)

First day we ALL had a race!!

Charlie THOUGHT he PRed for a bit, so all 3 of us got a photo by the "PR Bell" (oh, and SPOILER ALERT for my upcoming race report!!!):

Getting chilly post race!

Stopping for some big donuts at Lunds on the way home!

I'll have my 10K race report in the next day or 2, so check back for that! Nice work on your fourth 5K boys!!
