The TC 5K: My Sons' 3rd 5K!
>> Thursday, October 05, 2023
On Saturday (the day before the cancelled TC 10 Mile and Marathon), my boys did the 5K! It was super humid (it had just rained a bit) but wasn't going to be as hot as the following day. They were excited to see what they could do after a summer of "activity" but hardly any real "training" - they both went out about a week before for a 3 mile run to make sure they would survive. My wife went with Charlie, and I went with Henry. Henry's half-mile training splits were quite consistent: 4:15, 4:17, 4:23, 4:18, 4:08, 4:01, 0:47 (0.10 mile) = 26:13 for 3.1 miles. He decided to pick it up at the start of that 4:18 half mile which has a long uphill. He was WORKING on the last half of that run!
Here are a few pics from Saturday morning's race:
2200 people off and running!
There goes Charlie! (And I missed Henry, but he was just 50 feet in front of Charlie.)
Before too long, we saw Henry coming towards the line, and he was RIGHT behind one of his classmates that he was trying to beat! And I knew that HENRY knew he didn't actually need to BEAT him to place better than him because his classmate started quite a bit farther in front of him:
Henry's classmate and Henry!
Go Henry!
Here's Angela getting ready to raise her hands for us!
Charlie with a smile!
The goalie on Henry's soccer team and his dad!
A mom from school yelling at us!
Henry and Angela came back all flushed and sweaty.
Our 3 racers!
Charlie posted his 2nd fastest time of his three 5Ks, and Henry posted his FASTEST!
Just for posterity's sake, Henry was 175 out of 2283, and 14 out of 128 in the under 14 age group. Charlie was 703 out of 2283, and he doesn't show up in an age group for some reason.
Here's their first 5K race and their second 5K race.

Congrats to Charlie and Henry on their 5K! I was disappointed for you about the race cancellation after all your training. Sorry about your taxing weekend and the loss of your grandma. Just chiming in to say thanks for your writing--it's always an enjoyable read! Fan of your blog!
