Just Call Me “Sandy”
>> Thursday, August 07, 2008
So my running shoes filled with sand from cheering on the beaches of Lake Michigan during Saturday’s half Ironman (note the photos in the last 2 posts that show us walking 2 miles in sand at the start, and then cheering at the sandy finish). When we got home this past weekend, I cleaned them out REAL well.
It wasn’t good enough.
I went for an 8 mile tempo run last night (in 54:04 - 6:46/mile) in those shoes. When I was done and took them off, my socks were covered in fine sand. When I took off my socks, my feet were covered in sand too! All that sandy-sandpaper action against my toes took it’s toll, and I was left with a nice blood blister:

That's not that bad. It kinda looks like a hickey :P
Yeah Marcy, Pharmie just LOVES to suck on my toes...
I can hardly even break 7 for ONE mile! 6:46 over 8? I'm incredi-impressed!
Also... ouch for your toe!
Damn you be swift :-). Sorry about your tootsies! Michigan has a way of chafin' the life out of peeps ;-).
I need to remember not to have a mouthfull of breakfast when I read your blog, lol! Take care of that toe. Holy smokes, impressive pace on that run!
ugh, those are the worst!
YUCK.
It must be FEET WEEK (not to be confused with the Navy's version in NYC....)
You, Nat (MN Runner) and I all have feet fotos on our blogs!
The things we do for training...
We did Steelhead in 06 and 07 and each year we brought home a sandbox from that race.
That is one of the reasons why we didn't do that race this year. But, the transition area was over in the sandy/grassy area in 07 and that was terrible, there was sand inside your bike shoes, socks, running shoes, helmet, etc. My hubby even had sand in his bike shorts while riding...ouch!
And you will continue to find sand in places that you will have no idea how it got there.
I've wanted to tell you that I love your yellow shorts - 'the bowl full of sunshine' and that they are.
Those damn things can never be thrown out. Once you do retire them, you have to have them matted/framed. Classic :)
Um...thanks?
:barf:
In my best little kid voice..."yucky!"
Hope you come out of the sand dunes otherwise known as your shoes sometime soon.
Ouchies....thatz hawt!
Awesome run, Mr. Speedy.
And Ouch, looks like that toe hurts
Ack! I swear it's like an eyeball glaring at me!
1. great run.
2. ow to the toe.
3. thanks for the comment!
4. I love lists.
Thank you, Steve. I'd been missing seeing a gross foot photo, LOL.
it's not gross, but it is funny! :)
Mm, yum. I'll be having some nightmares about that toe tonight.
I think the blood blister is punishment from all of us slow runners since you are so speedy! We are subconsciously trying to slow you down! Seriously...congrats, you are running so well lately!
Steve, I found your blog from your comment on mine and it's an absolute hoot. I've really enjoyed reading the posts from the last year and am looking forward to reading about how you became an Ironman. BTW, I love your eating habits, I made reference to them on my latest post about the Cool Night Run. Keep up the great stories.
Catherine
Gross. But, not the worst I've seen on your blog! :) That was a speedy run for sure!
Nice! : )
Yowza!
Gross ... but not really up to your usual standards. Could do better :) haha
Pretty gross indeed... I think I remember you from a post I read a while ago that you let your cats lick the salt out of you after a run or ride.... that's also pretty gross lol
YUCK!!!!
yea, i was really missing gross foot / toe photos. thanks for keeping it real
I like how you just breeze over the whole 6:46 tempo run pace!!
You should see the blister foot pics from Badwater. ;)
Blech.
I think it looks like a hickey, too.
So you're an Ironman? We have five or six in my local running club; one of them is our former Prez, Cassandra Langley.
Congrats on finishing a full Ironman! That's on my "Someday To Do" List, which is different from the "To Do" List that I am actually working on right now at this moment; the "Someday" list is more like a "To Do List for Procrastinators" [rolling eyes]
Happy trails,
Connie :)
I've missed seeing your blisters! Thanks for making my day.
