This is actually pretty amazing.

"Nah, I don't need a bag. Got any packing tape?..."

I don't know why I get such a kick out of these. Here's a "special delivery" post from 2 years ago, and here's another one from 2 months ago. Enjoy.

Half Marathon Stroller World Record

>> Wednesday, February 08, 2017

My multisport “race buddy” Suzie Fox was in Florida this past weekend spending time with her sister and her niece and nephew. She raced a half marathon while she was there, and posted this on Facebook:

Her caption: ”We did it! My niece, nephew & I lowered the Guinness World Record
for Female Half Marathon Pushing A Double Stroller from 1:49:23 to 1:47:51.
Pushing 106 lbs total up the causeways was soooooooo HARD!!!!!!!”

NICE! CONGRATS SUZIE!!

When I raced the Lake Johanna 4 Miler last year with both boys, I figured our double stroller and 2 boys weighed about 102-104 lbs. (And the same goes for our Thanksgiving morning 5K with my son and nephew.) And as Suzie noted, it’s work on the hills!

Here are 2 more photos that Suzie’s sister posted before and during the race:

Pre-race.

At mile 9 with both kids sleeping. As I’ve noted
many times before, kids are unimpressed with speed. :)

Injury Update: Knee Still Hurts

>> Monday, February 06, 2017

Three weeks ago, I raced the YWCA Indoor Triathlon. My knee held up fine - I had some pain 2 weeks before that.

Then 3 days after that race, my knee hurt on an easy run. I called that my last run for a while, and just kept swimming and biking.

This past week, I finally went to see Dr. Folske for some A.R.T. on my leg. He thinks somethings a little tight or "caught up" around my knee, but that it shouldn't be too big of a deal. He REALLY worked my knee and quad well, and apologized for (probably) ripping out some hair. Here's what my leg looked like once I got back to my car post-visit:

It doesn't come through too well, but that's a LOT of red.

Then the next day, I saw Robert at Element Wellness Group for some acupuncture. He ran some electricity through my leg: a bit on the top through a tight part of my lower quad, and then a long section on the bottom along the outside of my knee:

My leg twitched from the electricity during the entire 30 min session!

I realized what part of the issue was a week ago when I saw Folske and Robert: when I first had the knee pain 5 weeks ago, I took some time COMPLETELY off. When it came back, I kept swimming and biking, and it didn't get better. I noticed this when I printed out my training plan to take to Folske. See? Have a look:

(Purple is aqua jogging or bike training/spinning.)

My knee still isn't totally better. Folske hoped I could run this past weekend, but I'm not there yet. We'll see how much longer before I try swimming, biking, or running again. Hopefully soon! In the meantime, I'm stretching, heating, massaging, and trying to take care of this knee! Fingers crossed!

My Boys

>> Saturday, February 04, 2017

This last week was "Catholic School's Week" for Henry in kindergarten. So they got to dress up on certain days. Here are 2 cute pics from my Instagram page:

"Sunday Best" day.

"Future Me" day.

Despite my wife and I telling him he should be an engineer because he loves to build and loves Legos so much, Henry keeps saying he wants to be "an artist, professor, and daddy like daddy" someday. (Which is ADORABLE, but he'll be broke for life.) So he's went to school dressed up like me as I headed off to class.

That night (Thursday) we took Henry to the Doctor because he had a HUGE tonsil and complained of a sore throat. He had strep. So Friday looked like this:

Caption: "Being home with a kid with strep throat feels a lot like being a negligent parent.
Our morning: cartoons, movies during my appt, and a quick stop at Izzys Ice Cream."

He's feeling better today. But my wife works this weekend. So it'll be 3 days straight of squirrelly boys cooped up with Dad. We're trying to get out when we can. :)

Oh, and here are 3 more Instagram pics from recent weeks:

Building an ice fort along the Mississippi. I could barely lift some of those
ice chunks! It got pretty big - look at how small Henry looks in the bottom photo.

Henry reading Charlie stories before nap time on a weekend where Mama was gone.

Adventures with Charlie: potty training at the gym, shoveling sidewalks, and falling asleep early.

Back with a (non) training update on Monday. Happy weekend!!

Wassner Twins at Israman

>> Wednesday, February 01, 2017

Yesterday, I saw this tweet from Rebecca Wassner, who is half of the pro triathlete duo known as the "Wassner Twins:"

These 2 images accompanied the tweet:

Yeah, she ran my 1-mile pace for an opening mile of a marathon. AFTER A 2.4 MILE SWIM and 112 MILE BIKE RIDE.

I replied to that tweet, tweeting Rebecca and Laurel back asking if those were Israman splits. If you've been a LONG time reader, you'll remember I went to Israel in January of 2014 to race the "Israman Eilat" triathlon (half iron 70.3 or full iron 140.6 distance).

My 70.3 relay team for 2014: me swimming, Rany biking, and Sharon running.

Well, T2 of that race is high in the mountains above the Red Sea, and then the first 15K (or so) is downhill. That sounds great, but everyone who does it says it's KILLER on the legs, especially running the final 15-20 miles of the race after that (flat, along the Red Sea).

I had heard the Wassner Twins finished 1st and 2nd in the full iron race! Laurel finished in 11:13 with a 3:24 run, and Rebecca went 11:37. (Those times were good for 7th and 13th OVERALL!) Nice work!

The hills out there are fierce. Here's a paragraph from my 2014 Israman race report:

The bike ride out there is epic. This race was label by Triathlete Magazine as one of the "top 10 triathlons in the world." And the scenery and course don't disappoint. I was talking with a fast biker post-race (it was either Ben in our group or someone else - I forget). This person said that in half iron races, they usually hit 40K in an hour. (Yep, that's pretty fast.) But in this race where there's OVER 2,000 feet of climbing in the first 15K, his first 40K took TWO hours.

Waves of swimmers heading off into the Red Sea last week (found in a Facebook album)

Laurel posted this photo pre-race saying "Start of the marathon at Israman.
Run all the way down to the Red Sea. Fast first 10ks but... Ouch!!"

The winning sisters! (Image retweeted by Laurel.)

70.3 winner Ben Collins, 140.6 winner Laural Wassner, and 70.3 winner Jenny Fletcher!
(Found on the race's Facebook page.)

Laurel told me yesterday via twitter that she still couldn't squat down. The race was last Friday; this was 4 days later. Well, rest those legs, and nice job sisters!

If you want to look back on some fun Israel/Israman photos from 2014, here's my 2014 Israman race report, here's a collection of other people's Instagram photos from Israman 2014, here are my Instagram photos throughout my 9-day Israel trip (some AMAZING memories in there!), and here's a Facebook album of race photos from 2014. If you really want to look through a lot of Israel photos/posts, here's everything tagged with "Israel Trip."

p.s. Here's a post from almost 5 years ago where I met the Wassner twins.
