Two Interval Workouts

>> Tuesday, May 23, 2023

Ten days ago, I hit the track for some 800s: 6x800 with 2:30 rest. I hadn't done 800s in a looooong time. I don't like them.

I didn't take my official 400 splits for the first 800 (I just glanced at my watch), but then I did for the rest:

1:20 + 1:22 = 2:42.3
1:21.4 + 1:19.5 = 2:40.9
1:17.8 + 1:19.4 = 2:37.2
1:19.6 + 1:17.9 = 2:37.5
1:19.3 + 1:18.1 = 2:37.4
1:18.1 + 1:16.2 = 2:34.3

Average: 2:38.27/800

Looks about right.

I don't buy that my HR was highest on my first one, but whatever...

And then (because I was feeling good), I did another interval workout the week after that. Usually, I try to do speed work every-other week, but I was ready to hit the track in back-to-back weeks which is always a sign that I'm feeling good! This workout was slightly more complex, but maybe more fun: 4 x (800 meters then 400 meters) with 2:00 rest between all. There was a nasty headwind on the backstretch, but the workout went well:

1:22.4, 1:20.1 = 2:42.5
1:13.7
1:20.6, 1:19.6 = 2:40.2
1:14.9
1:18.7, 1:19.0 = 2:37.7
1:13.4
1:18.8, 1:16.8 = 2:35.6
1:13.0

The 400s were quite consistent, and the 800s had a nice descend.

17 mph wind in my face down the backstretch! Nasty.

HR got higher in each 800 compared to the 400s. Yep.

Can you tell where I kept my water bottle off the outside lane? ;)

My first 3 track workouts of the year have all been 3 miles: first was this 12x400 workout, then 6x800 over a week ago, and finally 4x (800 / 400) last week - all 4800 meters on the track.

I'm planning on racing a 5K shortly! Back with some pre-race thoughts in an upcoming post.
