GIVEAWAY: Great Book For Runners
>> Tuesday, July 17, 2012
First a quick update on my last giveaway about 6 weeks ago. That was the one where I was toplessly (is that a word?) wearing a Camelbak Vest that you could win:
OK, on to THIS giveaway....
There's a fun little "coffee table" book that just came out called "1,001 Pearls of Runners' Wisdom:"
Why am I always topless in giveaway posts?...
The quotes and stories are split up into chapters such as "The Runner's Personality," "Women Only," "Running Form and Injury," "Training," "Racing," "The Marathon and Half-Marathon," "Motivation: Positive Thinking," and so on.
There's a chapter early on called "Why We Run," followed by a chapter called "Why I Don't Run." There's a great quote in the latter chapter that goes like this:
"Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until that feeling passes away." - Robert M. Hutchins, former President of the University of Chicago.
And then there's this gem from George Carlin:
"Have you ever noticed? Anyone going slower than you is a idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?"
And here's an interesting story from the "Women Only" chapter:
"Once I was out for a twenty-miler on the grass along the Parkway, but I was picked up by the police after three miles. It was raining and someone called and told them 'There's a crazy woman running...' They took me and left me off at the next exit." - Nina Kuscsik, on running in the 1960s
Well, I have FIVE copies of this book to give away! I'm opening up this giveaway from now through next Wednesday (July 25th). Here are the details:
TO ENTER TO WIN 1,001 PEARLS OF RUNNERS' WISDOM:
JUST LEAVE A COMMENT ON THIS POST!! Yep, that's it. Ba-da-bing: you're in the running to possibly win 1 of 4 copies of this cookbook. I'll randomly pick four comments to win.
I'm going to give the 5th copy away to a random person on twitter who follows me and sends out this tweet:
Fun little book GIVEAWAY on @SteveinaSpeedo's blog: "1,001 Pearls of Runner's Wisdom" - http://iwannagetphysical.blogspot.com/
Just follows me on twitter and copy / paste that tweet to be in the running for the 5th copy of the book.
Then check back sometime later next week (around the 26th or 27th) to see if I draw your name as 1 of the 5 the winners!
Legal junk:
- Open to residents of US and Canada.
- Just like in all of my giveaways, I've only been given these books; they have not asked or told me to say anything else. All of these thoughts are my own.
- When you leave a comment, please "sign" your name if you don't have a blogger account, otherwise it will be hard to figure out who you are if you're one of the winners. For example, say something like "It's Steve S. from St. Paul. Gimme that book!!"
- I'll assign all entries a number (for both the blog comments and tweets) and then use random.org (or other random number generating scheme) to pick a winner at random.
- If I can't get a hold of the winner(s) in 3 days, I'll re-draw for a new winner(s). So make sure to CHECK BACK early next week!
The publishers can ship to the US and Canada, so if you are from one of those places, comment now! Right here! And follows me on twitter and send out that tweet to have another chance to win! Do it before Wednesday the 25th. Thanks everyone!

If I only knew how to read.
You know what I don't understand.
Running your heart out in a race and next to two runners chatting it up. Not out of breath and discussing coffee shop topics. "Hello distractions, trying to race race here, why don't you take the next left and stop off at starbucks to chat. Great, thanks" ; )
This would be awesome! My quote would be, "Sign up for a race. Paying money to run is motivating to train!"
"You people are crazy!" directed at a group of trail runners is still one of my favorites.
I need more pearls of wisdom in my life, it's getting boring to listen to my brain.
Hi Steve: From the number of topless photos you post, I'm guessing you live in a clothing optional facility - at least in the Summer.
If I win the book, I will treat it like royalty, and keep it in the throne room.
Anonymous/George Fulp
I'm entered!!! Just like that!!!
Good luck, Steph!!
Thanks for the giveaway. As always, your blog is a joy to read. Keep up the good work!
It's Lane from ND. Sounds like a good book.
Sounds like fun.
Pick me and I'll send a topless photo of myself with the book. After all, there's only one letter separating "books" and "boobs." ;-D
Seriously though, would make for some great post-IMLP recovery reading!
I'm in; thanks for the giveaway!
Count me in!
Pick me!
Lavar Burton ain't got nothin' on me.
I worked with a woman whose definition of exercise was filling the bathtub with water, pulling the plug and fighting the current.
I was trying to come up with a good comment for my entry... but after reading PipTook's comment above I gave up. There's no way I'd be able to top that one.
Yo! I can read, and I'm from AL, so that's a rarity deserving of a book!
"You know running is bad on your knees..." says most... what do they know! :)
I want that.
Brent from Minneapolis
If you see me running, call the cops. - College me ... funny how much changes.
During my 16 miler on Sunday I would have given anything for a cop to pick me up and drive me a few blocks closer to home.... it was a rough one. But regardless I hope I win! :)
I suppose if I win a copy of the book, I'll have to read it while topless, right? That seems to be the precedent set. Although I'm not sure Pharmie would approve of photo evidence....
This is a perfect book for a Canadian boy! Craig from London, ON here!
Badabing! I would love that book. When I ran the MCM, I joked with a lady that we should commit a crime so the police officers would pick us up and drive us away. :)
Psshh, I could use a good laugh! Besides, I need something to entertain me when I'm not Googling "half naked male running blog." ;)

I'd love to have a copy of this book. I just kind of figured you don't own many shirts and they must always be in the wash.
I can read and I attepmt to run so I'd like to enter!
Whomever the winner is, I just hope it's one of the women above who volunteered to send you topless photos...for your sake (no offence to Adam)!
I think the police would probably pick me up if I were to ever attempt a 20-miler. I'd look like a staggering zombie.
small but thick... story of my life...
Pick me! :)
Kacey Gregerson
I want that book! Hot (literally) Alecia in Texas!
Hey Steve. Love the blog. Hpoing to win a book!
-Tall, nice-kid (or something like that?) Kyle Serreyn
If I win, I'll send you a topless photo of me reading it! :o)
I'm injured right now and could use some inspiration.
Kris G. in Minneapolis
If I win, I *WON'T* send you a topless photo of me reading it. You can thank me later. :)
Dan in Morgan Hill
Pick me! Although this really won't help my problem that the only books I read are about running right now.
I'd like one
I can always use more wisdom - count me in please!
I'm just going to assume that you'll need a picture of me reading the book topless, so.....since I'm game, please count me in as well. :-)
Looks like the perfect bathroom read.
I can always use more inspiration.
Krystal from OK
Ok, I'm in.
Me, me, me! It's been a cloudy and rainy Alaska summer and there's little else to do but read. And run, of course, hee, hee.
Cheers, dude,
I want it!
Book Me!
Awesome. Though Im glad its not a topless giveaway :-P
I'll take one!
These comments may be better than the book - if I win, I'll let you know.
Congrats on your race this past weekend. I would love to read this book. Thanks for giving them away.
Anyone who googles "topless" is going to find this post. I am staying tuned more to see the "after pics".
my bookshelf is looking a little empty, a new books sounds like just the ticket!
Me, please.
Must. Have. Book.
Must. Have. Book.
One entry please.
You have the best giveaways. Would love a copy.
With all the heat we're having, I've been getting a lot of extra reading in--maybe I can do another book report: http://www.muddycalves.com/2012/07/16/staying-the-course/
Lucky 58! I'm looking for my next read.
"Why am I always topless in giveaway posts?..."
Hahaha ... my first thought, when I saw that picture.
Maybe it is time to test some running shirts before the next giveaway. :-)
Greetings from germany,
Pete

Stamina will be rewarded sooner or later - but mostly later. - Wilhelm Busch

That book looks so fun!!!
Yes, that book looks great, sign me up!
Pick me! Pick me! :)
Sounds like a cool book. Thanks Steve!
Count me in! Thanks.
Can I have dat?
I need a new book to read!
I'm in the running! For the book that is!
What a great idea for a coffee table book! One of my favorite running quotes (that I bet won't be in the book) is "I don't think that a person should run unless he's being chased." said by Elijah Wood in the "The Faculty" (despite my love for this quote, I'm a runner).
Love the topless give away pics!
Jen in MA
I've given up trying to win the lottery. This might be the next best thing.
Need to win this.
Sneak in another one.
It looks like a nice bathroom reader.
Karri S in Blaine
This sounds like a good one!

I love books like this!
I'm out of witty things to say.
Congrats on 9 years.
I'm kind of glad a dude won that vest although I'm sure all you guys would have enjoyed a girl topless in that thing.
Steve, your posts are always enjoyed.
Please pick me for the book.
Melissa B. in Western Massachusetts.
I tweeted now I'm posting...maybe this will be the lucky one!!
I need this book to help me through an injury that has grounded me from running! Thanks, Steve!
Hooray for books about running to read while recovering and resting from running!
-Katie in Lino Lakes
I want to read a book.
That would be a great addition to the coffee table that I don't own :)
Justin B. from Chicago, IL
I'm always in for a giveaway! It would go well with my Wooden Wisdom book too :)
Winner, winner, chicken dinner.
I dig the book's cover photo. Thanks for the giveaway.
Richard
I love that TYR bag I won from you last year. I use it frequently. Here's hoping I can add a book to the bag!
I hope there are a lot of pictures in that book! Thanks for the contest. Tell Henry I said "Hi".
I'm in!
I think Henry needs to start giving stuff away!
Me please
Needing to remember why I should run anyway
Reading? What a novel idea.
Wow, how did I miss this giveaway the first time? I'd love to check that book out!

Hi Steve, I'm a Wookiee and I'd like to win.
