Thirsty (for knowledge) Thursday: My Marathon-Running Friend Who Had COVID-19

>> Thursday, August 06, 2020

I posted a link to an article in "Women's Running" on Facebook yesterday, and it's worth a share here as well. Here's my preface that I shared word-for-word on Facebook:

Here's an interview with my running friend Lauren who contracted COVID-19. She was an early case in the US back in March. Here’s a brief rundown of her situation:

THE GOOD NEWS? Her husband most likely caught it from her and had no symptoms.

THE BAD NEWS? She can’t breathe correctly yet. She’s a “fit runner,” and still very recently, she slept on her couch for 2 weeks because she couldn’t climb the stairs to her bedroom. This was 5 months after being “recovered” from it. Right now, she can only do 1 thing at a time: “I can move, I can eat, or I can talk. If I combine two of those three, I can’t breathe.”

It came on quick. She said “In a day I went from running eight miles to not being able to walk up the stairs.” She’s done 30 marathons/ultra-marathons. She’s not the demographic that’s worried about contracting COVID-19.

She went out 2 weeks ago to try the “run a minute, walk a minute” back-to-running routine, and she nearly stopped a police car to get help because it went so poorly.

She also has “COVID toe.” (Do a Google image search - it looks like bad constant frostbite.) Lauren said “it feels like there’s a Lego wedged under my foot.” It’s an acute pain that she’s wondering if it’s “just a part of life now.” She’s still working out what makes it more bearable.

A quote from near the end of the interview: “It’s natural that most people think, ‘I’m younger, I’m healthier, I’ll be OK, it’s old people and sick people who die.’ There’s so much news coverage on the number of deaths, which is certainly serious and important, but the day-to-day impact on people who have the illness and are counted as recovered is much more severe than I think most people realize. Even running friends don’t seem to realize how sick I still am, because of this.”

I often find myself sharing her situation when people say things like “but look at how low the death rate is.” Every case is not just like you get it and you’re done with it 2 weeks later: people have strokes, lung damage (lung transplants), heart damage, muscle damage, neurological issues, and all kinds of other permanent issues.

HERE'S the full article that I linked after that intro.

Many people commented on my Facebook link, but here are 3 that I want to share:

First, a high-school friend said: "Yep my friend in Chicago also very fit is now in a lung damage study unable to do any exertion since contracting in March."

Second, one of my wife's best friends from kindergarden through high school graduation (no joke) shared her experience with her partner: "Sounds like my house. V got it in mid March - still struggling with deep breathing and lack of taste/smell. I didn't have any symptoms and I tested negative for the antibodies. Still do not understand that - I think a false negative. Crazy scary."

Finally, a college friend said: "I got it mid March. Everyone in my family is fine. I’m still experiencing dyspnea (SOB), brain fog, and relapses with fevers, and such."

Again, here's the full interview if you'd like to read it.

Wordless Wednesday: Healing Thumb

>> Wednesday, August 05, 2020

On May 8th, I built some new raised beds for our veggie garden. (See this post.) I ended up smashing my thumb with a hammer as I was driving stakes into the ground to hold the beds in place. Well, the bruise below the nail has nearly grown out:

I should have taken photos every day to make a GIF of it growing out. Dang.

The First 6 Months of 2020

>> Monday, August 03, 2020

Here's TIME spent swimming, biking, running, strength training, and doing "sports" (only bike trainer time in my case) for the first 6 months of 2020:

That shows me starting the year in my "boot" just swimming and lifting, taking Febuary off from swimming all together to see if that helped my foot pain, getting kicked out of the gym in March (COVID-19) so swimming stops, and starting off running again in March. And lots of strength work: March is a lifetime PR, and these 6 months are all in my top 7 of strength time (December of 2019 right before this rounds off the top 7 months of my life - all in a row).

Here are those graphs as DISTANCE:

Because that doesn't factor in "sport" distance (which is just trainer time in my case), here's that added in at 17 mph:

Many years, I'll calculate trainer distance at 20 mph because I'm doing lots of "Spinervals" workouts. The last 2 years, I've done more easy riding (along with "Spinerval" workouts), so I've averaged it at 19 mph. This year, I've done only 2 workouts, with the rest being just easy or moderate riding. 17 mph might be a bit too easy, but I sure haven't been putting forth much effort on the trainer, so that's why I only used 17 mph to make that graph above.

SIX MONTH TOTALS:
- SWIM: 18,750 yards.
- BIKE: 103.0 miles. (Yikes. Tiny.)
- BIKE TRAINER: 18 hours and 58 mins. (322.43 equivalent miles, for 425.43 "total" bike miles.)
- RUN: 223.66 miles.
- STRENGTH: 205 hours and 32 mins. (A crazy big 6-month PR.)

[21.88 of those bike miles were with the boys: 5 miles riding along side of both boys, 7.96 with Charlie behind me in the tag-a-long, and 8.92 along side Henry.]

My running is moving in the right direction, I'm biking when/how I feel like, I'm still not going to the gym so I'm not swimming (which is about the only thing I miss), and my strength work is going great. So very few complaints looking back on these 6 months!

Maaaaaaaybe I can work on adding back some effort on the bike. Maybe.

Seven Miles!

>> Saturday, August 01, 2020

I started the month of May with a lot of "long runs" of around 4.5 miles. I ended May with a few over 5 miles. June was filled with long runs of around 5.5 miles, with 1 being 6.0 miles near the end. In July, all my long runs were over 6 miles, and I hit SEVEN miles on this earlier this week on my long run!

The "laps" are half-mile splits.

I did an extra 1.5 miles south of Ford Parkway when that's usually my turn-around! It felt like such a different run because I've never ran south of Ford. (Also, that meant mile 2.9 - 3.6 was all uphill on Montreal Ave.)

The week before, I did 6.53 miles at 6:45 pace on a flat bike path in Alexandria. But this past week, I held my pace just below 7s (6:57 ave) in this slightly warmer, more urban, and slightly hillier run with a lot more turning.

My wife signed up for the TC Marathon before it got turned into a "virtual" event, and now you can register for the "virtual" 10 Mile as well. (Side note: it will be my wife's 20th TC Marathon in 21 years!) I'm not planning on signing up for the 10 Mile, but I've really been thinking about doing my own 10 mile race (on the TC 10 Mile course because it's easy to remember and a beaut) around the first weekend in October when the 10 Mile and Marathon would normally be held. It would 100% be my slowest 10 Mile ever. Maybe I'll see if some of my teammates would like to join in for a race - maybe I can have my wife bike and host a water stop or 2 for us. I've been thinking about this, but I'm not totally commmited to the idea yet. Let's see how the next few weeks of longer runs pan out!
