Official Photos from the LAST EVER Oakdale Spring Classic Duathlon

>> Monday, June 23, 2025

I posted my Oakdale Spring Classic Duathlon race report 2 weeks ago. Since then, they posted an album on Facebook of race photos. Here are some I want to share.

[Oh, and as I noted in my race report, I did the "regular" duathlon (run, bike, run), but there was also a smaller "reverse" duathlon that started just before we did (which was bike, run, bike). So I spent most of the final run around "reverse" duahtlon athletes that weren't technically in my race as they had finished a ride and were running before their final ride, and I had finished a run, finished my ride, and was doing my final run.]

This guy from “NOW Bikes” changed a flat for me at a recent triathlon!

This volunteer was chatty and nice.

Posed with Eifel!

Judi giving her pre-race talk.

Talked with this guy pre-race too.

Pre-race. I’m out-of-frame to the right.

Start of the “reverse duathlon:” bike, run, then bike.

Walking to the start of the “regular” duathlon.

Final notes from Judi. (With timer Randy on the gray to the left.)

GOOO!!!

Close-up. I don’t know what’s happening with my lips,
and I don’t know why she’s on her phone.

The guys at the far left and far right were the 2 I was most worried about pre-race!
And they finished 3rd and 2nd behind me, so I was right!

All of us running off.

Me coming in with a big lead off the first run.

Close-up.

Peace!

Around the cones to the left to T1. (The cones to the right are the finish line.)

Heading out for the ride.

It was just after this that I saw my Garmin wasn’t working right, as I noted in my race report.

2nd place coming back to T1.

3rd place finishing the run.

3rd and 2nd in the same photo.

The kid was on their tail!

The kid’s Dad finishing the run, with the kid out on the ride with 2nd place in front of him.

This guy currently in 4th would out-bike the kid to finish 3rd overall.

More athletes finishing the first run.

A biker finishing the 1st bike in the “reverse du” with ME BACK THERE finishing my ride.

The look of “DAMN THIS GARMIN!”

Turning toward transition.

Starting the final run. I passed those 2 "reverse du" ladies behind me on the curve out of transition.

Lots of odd sweat marks on a morning that was GETTING WARM!

I had no visuals of other "regular" du runners, but here's 3rd overall hitting the run in 2nd...

... about to be passed by this guy. First, second, and third were locked up.

Me hitting the line.

I was HOT.

I didn't know what this woman was saying to her cheering section...

... but it appears to be something about a dropped chain! :)

Race timer Randy! (With me and my boys packing up my bike on the left!)

Second place about 7 mins behind me.

Third place about 90 sec behind 2nd.

Fourth place was the kid! About 2:00 behind 3rd.
3rd place is on the far left in the background with his family - we were chatting!

This "reverse du" athlete was flatted about half-way through the ride! He smiled as
I went past. Here he is finishing his run and starting the final bike REALLY far behind.

A "reverse du" finisher with his bike.

The kid getting his medal!

The woman who dropped her chain did just fine!

The guy who flatted made it!! Even though awards were wrapped up!

Here's my Oakdale Spring Classic Duathlon race report if you missed it. Thanks for a run race, Judi!

Final Spring Classic Duathlon Thoughts

>> Saturday, June 21, 2025

The FINAL running (and biking) of the Oakdale Spring Classic Duathlon was held nearly 2 weeks ago, and I managed to take the lead 5 seconds into the race and not look back. My runs were HOT, and I didn't give it a full 100% in the final run. (I'm a little disappointed in that - I should have been using it as a hard training day if nothing else!)

And the big "question mark" for the day was how I'd do on the bike. I haven't been riding hard consistently this spring and summer, and I felt that a little out there. But because I hit the wrong button on my Garmin, I also had my mind elsewhere on the ride. D'oh.

Here's what the overall "multisport activity" looked like according to my Garmin:

Run the blue loop, bike the big red square, and run the blue loop again.

The screwed up T2 (actually the start of the run) because I hit the wrong
button earlier in the day when it was trying to get me back to my phone.

Because of that, I realized I made a mistake in my Garmin results that I posted in my race report. I knew that my Garmin ended up counting T2 as part of my bike, so I subtracted the appropriate amount of time that ended up making my bike split go from 21.80 mph to 22.01 mph. But I realized later that I did NOT subtract the DISTANCE that I covered in T2. So taking off 0.02 miles, my speed drops from 22.01 mph...

... to 21.98 mph:

Damn it. Being ABOVE 22 felt so much nicer! ;)

I'll have some race photos to post on Monday, so check back for those! In those, you'll see that the 2nd runner in to T1 was just 67 seconds behind me, but I had no sight of him. I would have been more scared if I had seen him! But then he had a worse ride to fall back to 3rd, but then he out-ran the biker who passed him to take 2nd overall.

Us top 3 were all in the 40-49 age group, so the poor Dad who was 5th overall and was racing with his teenage son (the son finished 4th overall) was also in his 40s and took home NOTHING for being 5th overall. Dang!!

Anyway, here's my race report if you missed it, and check back on Monday for lots of fun race photos!
