Ironman World Championship ON A FIXIE?!?

It’s happened. In Kona, at the IM World Championship a few weeks back, someone finished with a fixed gear single speed bike for the first time in Kona race history.

On a website devoted to fixies, Cory Foulk said this about his race:

This is the bike I finished the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii on last Saturday. Never been done on a fixie. I know why - unbelievable effort.

He said he had to add brakes to the back wheel to make it “race legal,” even though there’s really no need on a fixie.

I looked up his results. He finished in 16:34 with a bike split of 8:01 (14.0 mph). I’d say that’s pretty darn good on a single speed!! Not that bright... but pretty darn good!

It wasn’t the first time Cory tried something “different.” He did Kona back in 1996 like this:

Frustrated by finding the Hawaii Ironman crowd "too serious," Cory Foulk decided to make a statement, that is, you don't need ten grand to do the race. How did he prove it? By riding a 61 pound single speed beach cruiser, barefoot, with ten pounds of Jolly Ranchers on board.

Well, he’s doing something right: his fixie finish this year in Kona was his 45th Ironman finish, his 15th at Kona, in his 7th age group. Congrats Cory, you crazy man!

  2. I LOVE IT!!!

I think I have seen this guy riding around town before. The local athletes often look to spice things up and there are some fun crazy races to keep things interesting on the rock.

  4. This is SO awesome. It is the tale of two bikes: Straight up Ironman in the front, straight up 5th grade in the back.

  7. Wonder if he'll sell that bike WITH the Jolly Ranchers, I could use a commuter bike that has personality.

    Great effort!

  9. there is hope for me yet! If he can do it, I can do it with my trusty road bike. (although I'll need a really bronze tan and some actual abs, apparently)

  14. The best thing about is that this guy is an orthopedic surgeon. Maybe he could help you with the heel.

  15. HA! I wonder if he was the dude I passed on the bike leg at IMAZ who was on one of those fold up bikes. The dude was in flip flops, a Hawaiian shirt, plastic leis, and a straw Calypso hat banded to his bike helmet.

  16. yes, we used to do the fold-up bike thing in the 80's, and i remember tom warren at tecate / ensenada in 1979 riding with a sombrero using a bungee cord as a chin strap. no helmet though...

today, i suppose you could buy a kevlar sombrero with gu holders built in. cowman has graphite horns these days, last i checked anyway.

thanks for the blog stevo - i like the whole idea of a little looser gourp out there. i have my 17th ultraman world's in a week or so, should be fun to see what kind of rolling entertainment that crew comes up with. wingnut central.
