Why I Don’t Do The Grocery Shopping

Pharmie gave me a list and had me get groceries today. But I broke the cardinal grocery shopping rule: I went hungry. I bought everything on the list (like a good boy), but I also came home with these things:

- 2 boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch
- 4 Totinos pizzas (without an ounce of real cheese)
- 2 cans of Spaghetti-Os
- 2 cans of Chef Boyardee (including CANNED Mac and Cheese)
- Turkey Jerky

Most of the jerky didn’t make it home, and by the time I post this, it will all be gone. And I haven’t had Spaghetti-Os in YEARS - I can’t remember the last time!

So I think I’ll try a new regimen of canned pasta products and fake pizza the day before the Chisago Sprint Triathlon this Sunday. In fact, I think I’ll reserve one of the cans of Spaghetti-Os for just after the race, as I’m watching the half-IM racers finish. So if you’ll be at the race, bring a spoon: you can indulge in a can of goodness with me after the triathlon!

I’m off to start carbo-loading. Just try to stop me...

Check back Sunday evening for a race report (along with a report on how delicious canned Mac and Cheese is...).

  2. Loved this post! My wife no longer allows me to go grocery shopping on account of all the crap I came home with when she sent me to get milk.

  4. Not a fruit in the bunch. Bravo!

  5. I do not want to see post-race pics!!

  6. You messed up by not getting the spaghettios with the meatballs. Those little meatballs (I know they are not real meat) are delicious. If they made a can of just meatballs, I would buy it.

Totinos need to be cooked (close to overcooked) to be good.

Take my advice. I did not get to be 400 pounds by eating salad.

Good luck at the tri. I am sure you will do great and probably have to poop before the race so get in line early.

  7. I used to lurve those canned meat ravioli when I was in Jr. High. As an adult I tried them again and the meat seemed to bear an uncanny (or is that all to canny) resemblance to sand. mmmmmmmmmmmm.........yummy.....

  8. I hope you at least used a coupon!

  9. I tried a different mac and cheese last weekend when we had a late dinner after driving up to Sonoma. I guess it was technically shells and cheese since the pasta was more shell-like. I basically like any form of mac and cheese!

And good luck on your race!

  12. Ah Totinos, how I miss you...

Isn't there enough sodium in that stuff to take out a herd of cattle?

    Good luck with the tri!

  14. Steve,
I read your blog but have never commented. In college I used to eat a can of cold Spaghettios almost every day for lunch...nice. The pic brought back great memories! I also thought wow, maybe this is a legitimate ultra aid station food. Carbs, lots of sodium, hmmm...might give it a try. I'm a Twin Cities guy as well, maybe I'll see you around.

  15. HAHA!! I think its most interesting how you buy things in multiples of two... save for the Turkey Jerky... speaking of... with all the other items, why not go for the BEEF jerky!?! HA!

  16. You and my husband would get along great. :>)

  17. I love spaghetti-os. It's a good thing you're so much faster than me, because you can get a head start on that can before I come at it with my spoon :-)

  18. YOu didn't just buy one of each thing, but no, 2-4. I'm guessing the store had 2 for 5 deals and all that, my husband thinks you have to buy however many to get the deal. So if it is 10 for 10, he comes home with 10.
    Did that happen??
    Don't shop hungry!!!

  19. oh god. i used to live off of that kind of food and now it makes my stomach turn just looking at it.

thats a really god thing (for my figure) but really sucks (for my taste buds).

*sigh. memories. enjoy the cereal, i used to down that stuff like it was ice cream. :)

  20. I think when you eat those Spaghetti-Os, you're going to remember why you haven't eaten them in years!!

Who knew they made canned Mac and Cheese???? Don't they have to call it Cheez???

  21. Your punishment for buying all that crap food is 5 hours of Spinervals - LOL!

  22. OMG...I HEART ME SOME CINNAMON TOAST CRUNCH.

One of my friends wrapped up a box this year for my birthday.

    I wish I was kidding.

  23. See, when I go Hungry and when I have a "free" day (meaning I've already weighed in at Weight Watchers and I have 6 days before the NEXT weigh in), I go for the Chocolate Covered Peanuts!

The really sad thing is that they make me kind of nauseous when I start eating them, but that doesn't stop me.

    Any way...enough true confessions.

Enjoy! and have fun at Chisago. Look forward to reading your RR.

  24. I just found your blog through xt4. I really like the two themes of men's undergarments (or men in undergarments - not necessarily men's) and crappy food. My son wants to move in with you as long as you promise to do all the shopping. Good luck at Chisago. I'll be there competing as well (fat boy division).

  25. Hahaha. I banned myself from grocery shopping when hungy. It's dangerous. I make poor choices! :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. what toy did you get with the cereal?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I don't eat meat, but other than that, I see nothing wrong with your choices. Looks like good training food to me!

  28. HA HA!!!

My husband does the same thing. He comes home with bags of corn chips, cans of black olives, Hot Pockets, and bags of the frozen peas/carrots/lima bean mix

Stuff I either cannot eat or refuse to eat. I will use the olives if I am making pizza though.

Have a great race this weekend!

  34. Your post reminds me of summers as a kid. My dad was a teacher so he was home with me and my brothers in the summer. We ate a lot of mac & cheese with cut up hot dogs. Yuck. Or his favorite "masterpiece" tator tots with cheese melted on them. Eww. To this day, I can't stand either one!

  35. Question for you or pharmie....what does she take with her nuun during races? Gels or where does she get the calories? I think I remember you saying she loved the stuff. Can you help? I'm thinking of giving it a try.
Good luck this weekend. Maybe you should have the can of Mac and cheese on the bike with you? Just put it in the spot where your water bottle goes. May taste good?

  36. I just goes to show that you need more "fun" food in your life...that's what my ex would say when I sent him to the grocery store.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. It's nice to have supporters.

Please report back on the mac and cheese in a can.

  37. I love junk food, so all that looks yummy to me! :-)

Good luck this weekend! Looking forward to the report, and of course, the pics.

  38. Blech, I was so dissapointed when I tried Spagettios a few years ago. I hope you enjoy it all, lol.

  39. Spaghetti-o's make me gag!!! But now I can put away some Cinnamon Toast Crunch!

  40. I remember eating Chef Boyardee Ravioli out of the can cold, back in my college days. I also seem to remember there was excess quantities of beer involved.

    Good luck at the race.

  41. I totally did the same thing yesterday - although my extras included a box of spiral Kraft mac n' cheese, a brownie mix, a cookie mix, fake cheese pizza and a Dinty Moore chicken & dumplin' dinner. Yay us!

  42. Ever since my husband bought Koolaid for my kids... he is no longer allowed to do the grocery shopping!!

  43. bahh humbug on the jerky. You're from the sticks. You've gotta make your own. It's super easy, much cheaper and healthier. Have fun on the sprint.

  44. Just the pics of those spaghetti-Os gives me heartburn!
