Swim, Doctor's Appt, Ugly Suits, Etc.

Five quick things:

ONE: I met swimming buddy Julia at the Y for a little swim yesterday. We were both pretty beat-up, both physically and mentally. We're both dealing with some injuries that are just bugging us. We had a nice chat in the water after our workout, and we both felt a little better about our situations.

TWO: Speaking of swimming with Julia, I just HAD to share this photo.... They had an "ugly swimsuit contest" at one of her Master's classes. She showed off one of her grab-bag suits, but lost to Suzie in the tuxedo suit:

Julia, Kortney, and Suzie. Awesome.

I'd LOVE to wear my ugly "grab-bag" suit* to one of their classes:

THREE: Shortly, I'm heading off to a appointment with a sports medicine Doc. If you remember, I took over 5 weeks completely OFF from running while doing stretches and seeing my ART Doc to keep my calf loose so my achilles could heal. But. It's. Just. Not. Getting. Better. I don't know what I should be doing. Should I do nothing? (No swimming, no biking, no walking, etc.) Should I be stretching? Is my achilles in danger of separating from my heel? Can I "work through it" and start back up? I ran 3 miles feeling good on the treadmill last Wednesday. Then I did an easy 3.5 miles with the "Run for Christchurch" group on Saturday. But then I did what I WANTED to be a 4.5 mile run on Tuesday, but ended up doing 2.5 with a fair amount of pain. Son of a gun.

I'll report back with what the "new" Doc thinks. I'm excited to learn more, but a little scared too.

FOUR: Make sure to scroll down and enter the CycleOps trainer giveaway! And check back this weekend as I post about a great break-up-the-old-routine "strength" trainer workout that I did Monday night on my new CycleOps trainer. (I have some nice awkward photos of myself to share from the workout...) If you do NOT like to spend time on the trainer, I think you'll like this workout.

FIVE: My lovely wife Pharmie just posted another post about pregnancy issues. Check out her blog.

*Note: In case you're new 'round these parts, that's NOT a grab-bag suit of mine. That's the one I wanted. And it's dang sweet. ;)

Those are the ugly swimsuits???? I find them amazing -- all 3 of them!! SO COOL! Then again, I'm a total nerd when it comes to swimsuits - the colorful and the more ridiculous, the better!

i wonder if my hotdog swimsuit would have been a contender!

I am sorry that your heel is still hurting. I hope the appointment goes well and I am sending healing vibes your way!

I feel your pain, I have been off running for almost 3 weeks as well, for some Achilles issues too. My pain is above the heel about an inch, it was sore to the touch, now its much better. I am slowly easing back into running, its frustrating, I also encountered some pain on my run this past weekend. Back to the sports chiro for some graston massage I guess....

Ugh. I can feel your frustration Steve.

I won't even try to give you advice, but definitely keep hunting down specialists that can help figure it all out for you. Find ones that are runners/athletes themselves. "Normal" people don't understand what it is like to not be able to run.

And is it strange that I find that blue shimmer equal parts ugly and sexy at the same time? Probably...

Recent studies show that rest doesn't do it for tendon issues. I don't know your specifics, but you'll need to be aggressive with your therapy.
Check out this piece: (that's what she said)

Per your tendon issue, as I told you I had the same issue at the same time. After 5 weeks I went to the dr because I really started to feel the inflammation. Unlike yours mine was healing on its own and had been getting better but I just wanted to check it out. The dr told me total rest for the achilles. I ignored him and still biked, but if you have been biking you may want to rest it.

so sorry to hear the injury is no better, hope you get some answers. i love your ugly suit!!! i was just at TJmaxx the other day and saw some god awful spandex-y shorts for men and thought of you. except they were a tad short....more like spankies for men....not pretty..at all!

your suit is definitely not ugly. just awesome.

good luck with the doc. i endured a few of my own leg injuries this fall/winter. i feel for you!

I am having a ton of trouble with Achilles tightness/pain and heel pain so I'll be interested to hear what's working and not working for you...we'll have to trade secrets. It's especially frustrating as the weather is getting nicer and I want to run outside!!
