The Embarrassing Thing I Did Last Night

>> Monday, October 20, 2008

So my last post alluded to something embarrassing that I was going to do last night. It’s not THAT embarrassing, but it’s a little pathetic. I think. But I did it out of love for my wife, which is the best reason to do anything pathetic.

So the 5 of us got primped and ready to go. We parked by the Cathedral, and walked down to the Xcel Energy Center (after we stopped for a photo):

Pharmie, Steph, Borsch, Me, Melissa

We found our seats. They were pretty good:

I went back up to get some mini donuts and soda:

The lights went down.
People screamed.
Girls squealed.
The lights came up on stage:

What were we about to see? Was it a concert? A circus? A political rally?

No, no, and no. It was So You Think You Can Dance, the live tour. Yes, from the Fox TV show. It was the top 13 dancers from Season 4 of "So You Think You Can Dance." Pharmie and Steph were big fans of the show. I got sucked in a little. Melissa just likes dancing. And Borsch was dragged along by Steph.

Here was a number with most of the dancers on stage:

Here’s Kherington and Will after their number with the bed and rose petals:

I gotta admit, I’m a BIG fan of Will. He’s a great dancer and he’s got quite the body. He’s on my “I’m not, but if I were...” list. You know what I mean.

Here’s the winner from last year (Joshua) dancing with Chelsea:

Here’s a photo of Pharmie and I half way through the show:

The best part of that image above is the 4 ladies in the background just behind us. THEY WERE SUPER FANS! Each time another one of the guys came out on stage, their panties came THAT much closer to being completely off! Seriously! Pharmie and I LOVED hearing them freak out! I mean, just LOOK at them!

Here’s the group on stage during a pretty cool, dark, Tim Burton-esque dance:

It got sooo good, that Steph started crying:

Moment of serious truth: I didn’t cry (like pansy Steph), but I DID get goosebumps a couple of times during some of the really great dances. I feel like a dork for admitting that. One of my FAVORITES was Chelsie H. with Mark doing a number about a work-a-holic man who has no time for his lady. Here’s the video from when they performed this dance during the TV show. I frickin’ love it. Especially the part at 1:37 when he “steals” her heart. Goose. Freakin. Bumps.

Here's the direct link to the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC4OtJgNdrY

So when a roadie brought out the briefcase while the lights were low, I started freaking out (ask Pharmie). Here’s a photo from that dance last night:

Here’s the sweet “door” dance that was popular too:

And the Viennese Waltz that made Steph and Pharmie cry during the TV show:

If you were a fan of the TV show, you’d like the live version. If you’ve never seen the show, it would be less thrilling to see live: there are a lot of inside jokes and talking about people that were on the show.

If you didn’t watch last season of this TV show, then you totally wasted your time reading all of this. Sorry. If you DID watch this last season, you’re SUPER excited for us.

The Moral of This Story: I'm a super geek, but so is Pharmie, so it all works out.

In race news: I’m doing the Monster Dash 5K this Saturday around Lake Harriet in Minneapolis (and I’ll be sticking around to cheer for the Half Marathon runners afterwards). I have a sweet costume in the works! More about that shortly...

1. Thanks for coming along, even if it does make us pathetic.

2. The guy in the bed dance was Twitch, the other tall guy with a rock hard body.

3. Steph is not a pansy. She cried because she was laughing so hard at Gev. She may have had tears later, though. I'm not sure...

4. Love you!

Steve Stenzel 6:21 PM, October 20, 2008

Dang, I thought that was Will. But you're right - it was Twitch. I still love Will, though...

;)

John 6:29 PM, October 20, 2008

Did I guess that or what...

Nothing embarrassing about doing it for your wife... your a good man!

Formulaic 6:30 PM, October 20, 2008

You guys are great!

It's good to see you guys out there enjoying life.

Thanks for the smiles!

Two things:

1. SYTYCD is one of the only reality TV shows I watch and love.

2. I'm running the Monster Dash Half on Saturday (my first half! freaking out!). I will either be dressed as Jane Fonda circa 1987, or as Jennifer Beal from Flashdance. That decision will depend on the color of leg warmers I buy.

Julianne 6:53 PM, October 20, 2008

I don't watch that show but you're post today makes me want to DVR it! That's so cute that you guys all went together to watch! ;-)

The photos really enhanced by anticipation, btw!!

triguyjt 7:05 PM, October 20, 2008

That looked like a fun time..

hilarious comment about "you would if you were" Got ya there...

Keep enjoying life Steve!!!

Glaven Q. Heisenberg 7:08 PM, October 20, 2008

This was a courageous post, because you just know, out there right now on the interwebs, is some total D*CK just ready to pounce all over something like this.

I. Am. THAT. D*CK!!

Bwaa-ha-ha!!! So You Think You Cand Dance? Really?

I've lost all respect for you.

Just kidding.

This was actually kinda sweet.

I'd never do it for my wife, who also likes SYTYCD.

But then we've already established I'm a d*ck. Now we know I'm an equal opportunity offender d*ck.

RooBabs 7:37 PM, October 20, 2008

Ha ha. Love the post. Also love the show, and I think the Hubs loves it just as much (if not more). We used to also watch Dancing with the Stars, but he decided he likes SYTYCD better- it's on our Tivo season pass!!

But I don't think he would do a live show. Then again, he thought that Chelsie was pretty hot, so you never know. I was cheering for Gev, because he's from my town (and maybe also because he reminded me of my first boyfriend, well the first boyfriend I had after elementary school, the first one I actually kissed).

Michelle 7:48 PM, October 20, 2008

Pharmie is a lucky woman!!!

Steve, i think i love you!!! :O)

Unknown 8:06 PM, October 20, 2008

Yes, you're a super geek.

But I can see why! The video you showed was very impressive! I need to tune in now that I know what I'm missing!

Kelly 8:07 PM, October 20, 2008

"their number with the bed and rose petals"

.... I think that deserved a deeper explanation.

LoveOfShoes 8:08 PM, October 20, 2008

The Bleeding Love dance...also my favorite from the season!!

I don't want 'reality' TV- unless it's some type of talent, or dance, or game show, or....OK yea I watch it all, too.

And wasn't it Katie in the door dance during the season?? How dare they replace her?!

Jeff 8:22 PM, October 20, 2008

What a guy!

I bought my wife tickets and she's taking my mom. For me, a night home alone with the remote and the eternal gratitude of the women in my life. SCORE!

Charlotte 8:31 PM, October 20, 2008

Wow, for a minute I thought you guys went to The New Kids on the Block concert! 'Cause that would have been way geekier;) And hey -I didn't watch the show but your post still entertained me. And? That dance number was pretty great.

CoachLiz 8:44 PM, October 20, 2008

Way cool!

Did you really eat those mini donuts and drink that mega soda???

I cannot wait to get a look at your Monster Dash costume.

Alili 8:51 PM, October 20, 2008

I'm jealous, what else is there to say. And I also LOVED the dance with Chelsie and Mark...it was awesome. Too bad I couldn't convince my hubby to go to the show when they were in MI1

Missy 9:03 PM, October 20, 2008

Wow, you ARE some kind of husband. Mine would have 'rented' an appropriate gay friend to 'chaperone.' HA!

Kim 9:30 PM, October 20, 2008

My fiance just said 'Man, we should have gone to see the live tour!'

:) It looks like fun! (looking forward to the costume post, too.. I have to come up with a good costume for a 5K next weekend too!)

magic wallet 9:34 PM, October 20, 2008

omg, that sooo does NOT make you a super geek. If anything, it shows your a open minded kinda guy and will do what it takes to have a fun night out on the town with friends. dancing is something special. maybe we all need to appreciate it a bit more...as u did last night.

this was my favorite from this past season.

Sarah 9:59 PM, October 20, 2008

I need to find a man like you - but my weakness is American Idol. sigh

Lisa T 11:18 PM, October 20, 2008

I came back to read today because I thought you might elaborate on that farting in the wetsuit thing. Maybe it's your costume for the 1/2 marathoners?

J~Mom 12:41 AM, October 21, 2008

I can't laugh because I went to the Hannah Montana concert and loved it!!

Shannon 5:10 AM, October 21, 2008

I'm so jealous! My daughter and I have been wanting to go to that show for a couple of years now. You secretly had a blast!

duchossois 6:16 AM, October 21, 2008

You must be like the best husband ever. Seriously.

Dave 7:03 AM, October 21, 2008

Just to be clear, I was *not* coming in to comment that it was Twitch, not Will. Not coming in for that. Nope.

(And yes, it was Katee in the door dance during the show)

C 7:51 AM, October 21, 2008

That was really sweet of you and Borsch to go along.

I've never seen the show, but still enjoyed your recap.

:) 8:17 AM, October 21, 2008

As long as you don't go to the New Kids on the Block concert....!

sRod 8:21 AM, October 21, 2008

I was thinking that it was going to be New Kids.

Looks like a good time--really cool dances.

Fizzgig 8:27 AM, October 21, 2008

I am with Srod, i TOTALLY thought it was NKOTB, which is in no way geekie btw.

If they had tours for my fave shows id watch them too. so, I have no room to talk. Bet it was awesome!

Jess 8:28 AM, October 21, 2008

I've never seen the show. But as long as you're comfortable with the geekiness, that's cool.

Trophy Wife 9:16 AM, October 21, 2008

I was going to tell you that the bed dance was Twitch not Will but looks like I was already beaten to that.

Also, the door dance was originally performed by Katee but she was hurt, at least that's what they said in KC last week when I went. I was pissed I didn't get to see the door dance and now I'm even more mad that obviously they did it for you guys! :)

Sorry, just a blog stalker you don't know getting riled up about SYTYCD. I just did a recap of the show they did in KC last week on my blog so I about died laughing when that was the "embarrasing" event you went to. Love your blog!

Nitmos 10:37 AM, October 21, 2008

Sorry, I'm cold as ice. I would not goose bumple out for this. Though I have seen Neil Diamond twice in concert so I have no credibility. That was swept away with the second live rendition of Love on the Rocks I witnessed.

Brian 11:37 AM, October 21, 2008

Anyone who can write in their blog, "He’s on my “I’m not, but if I were...” list." is much more of a man then me. I hope to not ever say that. From the start of your blog I thought you were going to say you went to watch the new kids on the block tour or something close. Not sure which is worse.

Runner Leana 1:09 PM, October 21, 2008

Oh, I love that show!!! I'm so excited that we now have our own SYTYCD Canada. Not like I'm going to try out for it though, cuz I cannot dance... Was Katee not on the tour? I thought she and Twitch originally did the door dance.

PS 1:46 PM, October 21, 2008

I'm jealous...Did I ever tell you you remind me of Benji from Season 2. Seriously ask your wife, she'll agree...I hope!

Melanie 1:59 PM, October 21, 2008

Maybe it's because I was a dancer for 16 years before I really a runner, but that's just about the only reality tv show I will watch. My point is that that also means I would have gone to this show. I'm so jealous. You're also right - Will is awesome. He's from Nashville, but sadly I've never seen him out and about anywhere or else I'd beg him to dance for me on a street corner or something.

M 2:05 PM, October 21, 2008

Four words:

Husband Of The Year

But more importantly, how were those donuts?

Aron 3:07 PM, October 21, 2008

LOVE that show :) so fun you went and saw the live tour!

mark is my co-workers first cousin :)

akshaye 7:04 PM, October 21, 2008

Haha! Embarrassing yes .. but as long as you had a good time - who cares!

SWTrigal 7:14 PM, October 21, 2008

I LOVE SYTYCD!!That is so awesome and I am jealous...you rock!!

Anniversary Moments 8:02 PM, October 21, 2008

It takes a REAL MAN secure in being a REAL MAN to admit everything you just did! And Pharmie is one lucky gal! I was nervous for a minute...I thought you were going to say you say Celine or Michael Buble or something.

Marci 9:22 AM, October 22, 2008

Sounds like you had a great time... even if you did get goose bumps and freak out :)

Anonymous,  9:28 AM, October 22, 2008

i am super jealous. i would have found it embarrassing to go to that show 2 years ago, but my recently turned ex girlfriend was a professional dancer and i got hooked. and now, i LOVE it.

Anonymous,  10:10 AM, October 22, 2008

I heard the Bleeding Love song last night on the radio after I read your post...I really can't listen to it now without seeing the dance (which was good).
And you are not alone, I have taken my mom to see both Rod Stewart and Cher (secretly, inside, I liked it!).

Darcy Franklin 1:25 PM, October 22, 2008

You are a MAN! SYTYCD is the best reality show on TV because these people are true athletes with crazy talent. Singers(Idol) are a dime a dozen and voices can be manipulated, these dancers are fantastic. I am just jealous that my hubby (that is the only realty show he will watch with me) and I weren't there too!

BTW, on any given night while I am making dinner I have music on and pretend I am a great dancer.......I can't see myself, I am sure it is horrifying. However, if I pretend I am a great singer, I can hear myself and it is not pretty!

Dance ON!!!!

chia 2:13 PM, October 22, 2008

Dude, dancers are crazy athletes. How can that possibly degrade your level of manhood ;-). Glad you enjoyed!

21stCenturyMom 7:19 PM, October 22, 2008

Are you sure you're not? bwahahahahaha... Just kidding! NTTAWWT.

I love SYTYCD and watch it religiously. It has the choreography.
