Should I Be Flattered Or Frightened?

>> Thursday, December 20, 2007

Recently, someone leaked some sensitive information to me. Some of my students and former students started a Facebook group called “Steve Stenzelholics Anonymous.” This unnamed informant logged in and showed me the page (as I don’t have a Facebook page). I took a quick screenshot:

The description of the group reads “I like Steve Stenzel. You like Steve Stenzel. That guy over there likes Steve Stenzel. I can stop anytime I want. I just don’t want to right now.”

Scary? Maybe. Flattering? A little, in that creepy sort of way. Kinda like when you catch that guy at the gym watching you workout. You know the guy. Every gym has that guy.

I think what could have led to this is that my current students found my blog. Yep. Crap. No group of current students had ever found my blog while I was still their professor. But this sneaky group has. They know too much about me for me to be their professor. And I have them again for a different class next semester. Poop.

What happens when students know that their professor spends the weekends gallivanting around in tighty-whities and suspenders? Nothing good can come from this...

Ooohhh nothing good can come of that! Your students are totally reading about your penniieeessss. That's just wrong! But hey they are college aged right? I might have to join that group now. Note to self - get facebook account.

"Hello my name is Dana & I like Steve Stenzel" I'd say we are all in good company. But since you have talked about your naughty bits there really isn't anything else(outside of your marriage & family stuff) that you wouldn't want your students to know. Is there?!?

hahahahaha! stinks to have to think about sensoring...so don't!!

Unknown 8:41 AM, December 20, 2007

You have an actual fan club! How cool is that? and yes it is a little creepy in a stalkerish kind of way.

Anonymous,  8:45 AM, December 20, 2007

oh man, that's flattering and a little scary. They probably just think you're a cool teacher though :)

Danielle in Iowa in Ireland 9:44 AM, December 20, 2007

Hahaha, I love that they classified the group as "Common Interest - Sexuality." Yowza!

Iron Girl Nyhus 3:52 PM, December 20, 2007

Duudeeeeee!! Creepy yet flattering. You're not going to start censoring now, are you?

CoachLiz 8:51 PM, December 20, 2007

That is a riot! I remember when I was still teaching HS and I was spotted by members of the football team when I was teaching a water aerobics class at the local gym and was dressed in my Speedo swim suit.

It was all around school in the next day or two about Mrs. G looking hot in a swim suit.

I wanted to crawl under my desk and hide.

Merry Christmas!

As a college student, and facebook enthusiast, you should be flattered.

I especially like the photo they chose for the group's picture.

MissAllycat 2:05 AM, December 21, 2007

I may have to join that facebook group. :)

RunBubbaRun 5:52 AM, December 21, 2007

That's funny, yet way creepy..

Maybe we could sell your "undies" on ebay and makes tons of money..

Rainmaker 6:51 AM, December 21, 2007

Clearly like you - I need to join facebook. So I can join your group of course!

brendaj 6:55 AM, December 21, 2007

I say it's way too late for you to censor, so why bother!

GP 9:10 AM, December 21, 2007

I'm so jealous. Not so deep down inside I want a fan club! I don't, however, have any incriminating or funny photos in existence to make it worth anyone's while. That's pretty awesome!

Kim 12:22 PM, December 21, 2007

youre a pimp. who doesn't like you?! mackdaddy.

Caroline Houdek 7:48 PM, December 21, 2007

Yeapers, those students from that institution that will remain unnamed do things like that. I even got invited to join one of the "fan clubs" they started for a certain other photo instructor. Trixy trixy.

And you need a facebook page! Then all your students will do is ask you to be their friend... but then again it's just another way to find out information about you!

And if I'm invited I have a photo or two to leak!

tracie 8:28 PM, December 21, 2007

Don't change a thing. People have many sides. You can still be a hardnose, kickass professor and a crazy, wacky triathlete. Keep 'em guessing! Merry Christmas.

triguyjt 10:33 AM, December 22, 2007

keep an eye out..soon they could be putting up pages posing as you..seriously.
go slowly..look out

Tammy 11:28 AM, December 22, 2007

very surreal, isn't it? We tend to compartmentalize our online life, but then someone comes along and integrates it! damn. Now I have to go find that facebook group and join!! :)

Unknown 4:21 PM, December 22, 2007

I think that would creep me out. But clearly you have a fan club!

Beth 6:08 PM, December 22, 2007

the Dread Pirate Rackham 11:25 PM, December 22, 2007

SingletrackJenny (formerly known as IronJenny) 7:37 AM, December 23, 2007

I'd be creeped out, unless I found out it was my close friends pulling a trick on me. I don't have facebook... is it a blog portal like blogspot? Maybe you should sign on, so you can at least see who comments and stuff.
Yeah, I'd be weirded out.

Sixteen Chickens 11:26 AM, December 23, 2007

Students found your blog, what can you do? Hmmmm... maybe they should be writing essays instead of surfing the internet. Sounds like they have too much time on their hands. As a professor you can do something about that, can't you? I feel a 20 page essay coming on...

teacherwoman 6:41 PM, December 23, 2007

Hmmm.. very interesting! I know I wouldn't want any of my 6-11 year olds finding my blog!

Dances with Corgis 9:38 PM, December 23, 2007

heh. I am sooo smirking at you right now. That's pretty freaking funny. How did you find out about the facebook group? Did they link to you? I love it. hahahaha. :)

J~Mom 9:39 PM, December 23, 2007

You are not doing anything wrong here so I say keep at it. But that is creepy how they stalked you. :>)

Sarah Elaine 1:21 AM, December 25, 2007

Dude, it's the way of the now. I have 2 teacher friends who have "fan clubs" started entirely by their students. No kidding.

The "kids" (all over 18, I might add) just think it's a cool way to honour a prof they like. Enjoy it!

Does this mean you won't be treating us to any more pictures of you clad only in shaving cream? ; )
